Check the chainring too.

Cheers will do. Just took off the shock and greased the air can mentioned from a previous post. You never know. Re-torquing all of the bolts and if it's still creaking then cranks, chainring and motor width compensation screws will be next.

My 9.8 had a creek that wouldn't go away in spite of my trying all the right things. What finally fixed it was just hosing it off. Since then it's gotten real dirty several times but that creek hasn't returned.

Annoyingly when I was faffing around with bars I lost the little bolt and square nut for the remote. No idea how to find out what size that is !!

Would suggest you contact dealer you bought from and ask them if their workshop happens to have a spare nut/bolt lying around. The buttons do fail and so they get returned to dealers so they can be warranted etc..
If no success, PM me.

Hi all,

is it okey to make my first post on this forum in this tread just to say how happy I am with the purchase of my new (2023 model) Trek fuel exe 9.7?
This is my first e-bike. My previous bike was a RKT 9 RDO Niner. I love that bike. It’s perfect here in Holland with not much elevation and fast racks. But I developed long-COVID in the beginning of 2022 and I can’t ride my Niner for more than 20/30 minutes anymore.
I was really nervous about buying this bike. I couldn’t test it before buying. And really worried that I should have gone for a full fat e-bike. I’m a big guy, 189cm, 105kg, but this fuel exe is a perfect fit for me.
On boost mode, which I still need, I’m fast enough to break my own strava pr’s. And I can double my ride time without a complete relapse….
after 45km the battery was dead for the first time. Everything full power, but only 340 meters in elevation. Which is fine for me here in Holland.
I thought I’ll share this for other people in a similar situation. (Big guys wondering if this bike is ‘strong’ enough)

In this context I'll also drop my first post here since I bought the 9.8 XT two weeks ago. It's not my first ebike (I have a Focus bold² for over seven years now - mainly as a commuter), but my first one to pursue my passion (trail riding).

I didn't wanna buy a new bike this year, but it was over 50% off and I really couldn't resist, though I never tried it before - I just went by the number and ordered a large (with 185cm / 6'1).
Since I'm familiar with the torque of a full power ebike, it was clear to me that I don't wanna have this concept for a trail bike. Initially the look of the Fuel didn't really appeal to me since I prefer more straight lines (I also own a Raaw, before this a Santa Cruz Hightower etc), but finally I up with the Fuel because of the geometry, the reviews, the motor.... and of course the price.
I've tested a Pivot Shuttle SL and I really like the Fazua and I had some Fazua bikes one my list (Heckler SL, Jam SL etc), but at the end the reliability and quality of the Fazua System has put me off so I was looking for alternatives.

After I've replaced the SRAM Code R with some XTRs, the stock tires with Maxxis Exo+ (Assegai, DHR2) and the handlebar with a oneUP 35 rise and a basic setup of the suspension (I just went by the settings suggested by SRAM) I went for a short ride on my home trails.
I felt comfortable right from the start and the geometry is (as expected) just right for me. The longer front (compared to my Jibb) and the additional weight makes it just as stable and calm as the Raaw, but it's faster in tight sections due to the shorter chainstays.
I did the first uphills with in the eco mode, later on I used the trail mode for the uphills to repeat some trails. I can't ask for more power - to me the support of the motor is exactly what I've been looking for. It just helps me to get to the trail a bit faster, but with also more breath left, which then really helps when descending because I feel also less tension in the body when more energy is left.
I'm already looking forward to taking the bike to other places next year - maybe I can skip a shuttle here and there.

I guess you went for a XL? Did you change something regarding the spec?

I still wonder how people change tires with this "plastic ring" installed in the line pros? I had to use assembly paste and still it was a mess to install the Maxxis.

Re the "plastic ring", I'd definitely recommend getting rid of that plastic rim strip and using normal rim tape. Imagine how hard it is going to be when ypu need to remove the tyre when you've got that irrepairable flat out there in the wild - nightmare 😳

@clmz Yes I went for the XL. I am sort of in the middle between L and XL. My Niner is a large. But the XL had a great discount and was the only size left.

I am very pleased that after the initial setup I'm perfectly comfortable on the XL. Yess it's a lot bigger than my Niner. A LOT longer, but I still feel like I am 'in the bike' not on top of it.
(Of cause the Niner is a lot more playful and easier to throw around tight corners.)
But I'm mostly very happy to be ably to go out riding regularly without any health relapses!!

My bike is still stock. But not vey happy with the tires so far. My niner was setup with recon up front and recon race in the back. Those were enough for the trails here in Holland. And faster rolling. And I find the bontrager tires very stiff.
But for now I'm not really planning on an upgrade. First I need to put a couple more kilometers/miles on the bike.

It's the same for me with a lot of bikes from other brands, where the large is usually around 470, the XL around 500mm reach - with 1.85 I usually fall right between those sizes.
Since I had bikes with 475, 510, 490 and 470 before, I 've developed a good feeling based on experiences which size is the right one by having a look at the geometry data. It's not just only about the reach, but also stack, chainstays, top tube length, wheel size etc.
The Jibb has also only 470mm reach, but long CS, comparably high stack and this "special" calmness all Raaw bikes offer (not onyl by their weight). But 470mm reach, even 480mm, felt short to me with other bikes - so at the end it's the sum of all the things above. I can also definitely say that everything over 500mm reach is too long for me, though it might feel good while rolling around and on fast and flowy trails.

Dealer had one recently but can’t find it right now! Still looking. They can’t order the bolt as they buy then whole unit direct from TQ. Quite annoying! I’m sure there must be a nut and bolt that fits somewhere is a diy store.

Emailed TQ to see if they have specs of the nut and bolt too.

I checked my bike to get the dimensions. It is this:

Bolt: Din912 Socket head cap screw M3, 12mm long (excluding the head)
Screw: Din562 thin square nut M3, 1.8mm thick, 5.5mm square

If your shifting is getting a bit notchy or suddenly needs adjustment you might check the cable housing end cap at the rear derailleur. The plastic one that came on the XT derailleur of my 9.7 cracked. Replaced it with a metal end cap.

Does an iPhone need cell reception for the Trek app to track your rides. I started using my old phone, to track my rides, which has always worked. . But, even though it is Bluetoothed to the bike, it’s not tracking my rides. This phone doesn’t have cell reception anymore, since I have a brand new iPhone. I don’t want to take a chance on falling and breaking it.

Yesterday I cought a stick into my rear wheel, bending a spoke. Does anyone know what size spoke is used in the Bontrager wheels?

The standard wheels? I don’t have any spokes but have a spare wheel if that’s any good for you. Ahh but just seen you are in Germany so probably not.

Thanks, I am hoping that someone already had to replace a spoke and knows the size. I hesitate to take the spoke out and then idle until a now spoke arrives.

And yes, it is the standard Bontrager carbon wheel that came stock on my bike

If your shifting is getting a bit notchy or suddenly needs adjustment you might check the cable housing end cap at the rear derailleur. The plastic one that came on the XT derailleur of my 9.7 cracked. Replaced it with a metal end cap.

THIS! I had the same issue and tried routing the cable through the rear triangle. So far no issues after 10 or so chunky rides.

Anyone running the Garbaruk front chainring on their Ex-e? If so, can you post pics?
I remember seeing a post about it, mentioning you can't run chain guide, but can't find it any longer.
Is the offset different from the e13 stock chainring?

Is anyone else range extender battery losing its capacity quite rapidly?

The TQ specs (in the user manual) say its rated capacity should be 2.64ah, mine is showing only 2.3ah available in the battery health stats according to the TQ app, so a loss of 12.8% in 56 charge cycles.

This seems quite high to me, anyone else noticing the same? The specs say that it should lose this amount of capacity after 400 charge cycles, mine has lost it after 57 cycles

The main battery is also showing some loss of capacity, but not as much as the range extender, the main battery should have (according to the manual again, but I havent screenshotted that manual here) 6.24ah, but now has 6.1ah after 38 charge cycles according to the TQ app, so only a 2.5% loss of capacity, which is probably more in line with what I would expect.

I'm tempted to try and warranty the range extender as it seems to be losing capacity way quicker than it should be - unless I'm reading the specs/tq app incorrectly? any comments/words of wisdom for me?

Yep. I have the 32 T one [DM MTB chainring for TQ Motor]. I reckon the 34 T would fit fine too but the 38 T might be too big [unscientific guess].

There has been A problem with the app, if when you open it on your phone and before you ride go to the map page and then return to the ride screen and that overcomes it.

I emailed the developer earlier in the year when there was a problem with no elevation data on the app and they fixed that with an update.

You don’t need cell reception to track your ride.

You need to have all the hardware running on the latest firmware versions shown on the tq website. The firmware was released last month.

IME, 5mm housing fits and handles the internal routing much better than the normal 4mm. Tried a lot of different things and that finally got my X01 setup shifting as light as my other bikes.
