    My Rail, Resting on Stuff

Down a steepish bank riding Tombstone trail in Hanmer Springs, NZ. I was pinned by my own weight against those two spindly tree trunks, one at each shoulder. My bike, feeling sympathetic to my plight, came down on my back. I had to crawl down between the trees to free myself. One of the most fun...

Complete new drive train - cheaply

Strangely enough, looking at a couple of shops, the SLX and Deore cassettes are around the same price https://www.torpedo7.co.nz/products/SHCS2N0AJ/title/deore-m6100-12-speed-cassette-10-51t---silver https://www.evocycles.co.nz/Product/323127/shimano-slx-m7100-12speed-cassette only difference...

    Hi Trekkies

My Rail 7 is my 2nd Trek, I also have a Remedy. I love riding my Rail, and I think in general Trek offer well designed bikes and good bang for buck ( at least here in NZ they are good value for money ). That said, I think there are always minor issues with any bike, and Trek is no exception...

    makes sense!

    Clicking from rear hub

I wouldn't have thought a big hit would loosen the headset. Do you have a torque wrench? You're really just preloading the bearings with the top cap bolt, torque to 4nm. Only thing I can think of is maybe you didn't loosen the stem bolts when you did it? Loosen stem bolts, torque top cap bolt...

    Clicking from rear hub

How's the headset, did you break the tab off the knockblock in that crash you had?

    Clicking from rear hub

@Doug Stampfer are you still having this issue mate? If so, I'd be looking at the freehub. The Bonty freehubs aren't very well sealed, and need regular attention. I found two broken springs in mine the last time I serviced it. Then shortly after that the glue they use to bond the hub to the...

    Australian maximum speed 25kmph

As @KeithR says, here in NZ there is no maximum assisted speed limit. What we have is a maximum power output limit of 300w. Note that the maximum wattage of the motor may be much higher than the maximum power output https://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/vehicle-types/low-powered-vehicles/ "A...

Knock-Block failed - Trek Rail 9.8 carbon frame damage

@Slapbassmunky @bluewater87 that's good to know about the Zeb, that fork is on my wishlist as an upgrade. I have the 2020 Rail 7 with the Yari, which does clear the down tube OK

    Trek Rail 7 Urban kit/error 503

@Jubby if I was you I would try a centrelock - 6 bolt adapter, seems like the easiest route!

    Trek Rail 7 Urban kit/error 503

Eh? It's a standard 6 bolt rotor, not Trek specific

Knock-Block failed - Trek Rail 9.8 carbon frame damage

Painting your frame is one thing, but I hope you're not planning to "upgrade" to v brakes!? ?

Knock-Block failed - Trek Rail 9.8 carbon frame damage

I think Trek designed the straight downtube & knock block simply to have a point of difference from other brands. They claimed the downtube was stronger if it didn't have a bend where it joins the headtube (although other brands seem to do perfectly fine). Having a straight downtube meant the...

Steerertube length on Rail 5 L

@AME geometry chart lists the head tube on the large as 110mm (it's dark outside and I don't want to go measure mine). 3x 10mm spacers plus standard Bontrager stem is 40mm. Measured from the crown, you're going to need around 180mm. If the 38 is cheap enough but the steerer is the wrong length...
