Good morning everyone. My engine cover cracked so I made a protector out of Kydex.

If it was 2mm thick it would be difficult to mold, or rather the base material (motor cover) would be distorted by the heat, so I made it 1mm thick and it came out beautifully.Kydex is easy to obtain and form, so I recommend it.

Good idea💪....but i'd consider covering ALL the underside and side fairings. A few of us had the motor guard completely shatter into ten pieces plus just on soft branches/wood step-ups.

Check out last July and August of last year on this thread.🍻
That's right. As you say, it's not designed to withstand a direct hit. It's designed to protect against debris kicked up by the front wheels.

I'm also interested in the carbon version, but considering the price, I personally don't think it's realistic, so I'll look forward to the SZZS motor cover V4 lol

I'd argue, and think most emtbers too, that it should be able to handle a direct hit on punchy ascents. It's not the same as a crash impact from a hard landing or failed descent.

I can only speak for myself, I'm a very good technical climber, 35 yrs + mtber...the SZZS guard is amazingly weak and brittle. It's confounding how poorly engineered the guard is compared to the rest of the frame's brilliance. But to be fair, the CEF50 frame is one of their newer attempts into emtb frame fabrication, especially lighter weight.

My two other E-mtb motor guards do just fine on the same trails and they're Bafang OEM plastic covers. My point is, it's not just a dust cover, it's actually a protective guard structurally.

I do think the Kydex with the SZZS is probably easiest if it's done with the full contour. It should give a decent amount of impact resistance. But overall good thinking on using a malleable material.👊

I love kydex and have used it to for downtube protectors in the past, but an unsupported design, it stands no chance. I feel like its more brittle than the oem plastic. The issue is it needs more surface area for support. If you look at the rockguardz website, they go up and essentially wrap around frame for more surface area to support the guard.

Sure on some. Not on all. This Cube E-mtb looks fairly close to the CEF50. It's definitely piggybacked onto the the Cube OEM guard plastic, but a complete shell with internal "trusses" could be added. Honestly, I think just a CF shell would with an extra layer along the underside would work. It really doesn't have to be too fancy.😎

I'm going to wait for their feedback before I speculate further. If they can do it and it's close to my $100 limit for a small initial batch, then I'd be game for sure.💸 Otherwise, I'm fine with my CF mod.

BTW/The Cube overlay bash plate looks fantastic.👑

i call up a specialize 3D printing company to help me print out the motor guard, They can help me PETG carbon 20% infill for under USD20 pc BUT they told me it not going to reliable as normal 3D printing its by layer n layer to each n the layer join will break in impact. He advice me to use Laser 3D laser n powder but cost alot more. Nylon PA12 cost 80USD and Laser aluminum cost USD140 here in Malaysia

that's why you should only use the 3d print as a "base" and cover the rest with a carbon mat, including resin.
that could be enough. i'm thinking of buying a set with a carbon mat and resin and trying it out on the basis of the 3d print. however, i don't have enough time at the moment...

this is another way to make a carbon part making the mold would be difficult for this though
I like the idea and process, but the art of it all is fabricating the mould (as you already stated). Did I understand that correctly? Otherwise, clever idea for the small fabrication shop. It would be a challenging DIY work-around👊

Haha! New update on custom CF guard outsourcing.. I sent a pic of Calvinty's 4 high-end componentry CEF50s and asked again if Rockguardz could help. Here's is Ian's reply:

Anybody in UK or Europe (close to UK such as France😉) mind traveling to the Rockguardz shop with their CEF build?

Or more likely, would any CEF50 owners in the UK/Europe/Asia/North America mind sending them an extra motor guard to work with?

Ian at Rockguardz doesn't want the CAD file. He wants the direct hands-on approach understandably.

If so, It would be a huge team effort and I as well as others could PayPal you $10 USD to help defer shipping and/or travel costs.💸🍻

The speed sensor has a extention cable then to motor. The extension cable it's a bout one feet long only which sit in between speed sensor n motor

I don’t live too far away so I may be able to take my bike there. I just have check my diary when I’ll be free to go.

I've assembled my red rocket!
The engine is running - the son drove a little in the yard. You can't go far yet - I bought a shock with the wrong fastening and now I'll wait for a new body from e-bay. This delays operation for 3 weeks((But I am pleased that the project is working.
The kit included 2 engine protection covers, printed on a 3D printer. The front fastening on one immediately broke, the second was able to be screwed on, but I feel that it will not last long. One of these days I’ll go to a local carbon fiber specialist and see if he can make such a part. I hope we can find a solution - the current defense is complete nonsense.
During the process of assembling the most complex element, the battery was lowered into the frame - as a result, we had to deal with the damper around the hydraulic lines - the 720wh battery clung to them. Out of fear that the battery will be difficult to remove in the future, I wrapped a rope around it))
There were no questions about the quality of painting. Everything is fine. I was surprised by the unprotected window for the cables above the engine - I glued a piece of rubber frame protection onto it and threaded the cables through the slot. I think this should better protect the engine from dirt.
Well, I made a mistake when ordering the lower cup of the suspension fork - ordering 1.8 instead of 1.5 inches. As a result, I put back the original cup that came with the frame. As a result, my configuration is the upper hope cup, the lower one is native Chinese.
