If you're going for the Rise, you'll need to be more careful on your rolling resistance. You might think you want more and yes, in some cases, that might also give you tyres with more straight line braking especially on the rear - but I was loosing 20-25% range with the DH22's over Wild Enduro's (2.4). You'll also not benefit from your "lightweight" bike if you stick 2 tonnes of rubber on it.

Yeah this has been playing on my brain a little.....whole point is to have better ground up weight improvement and I’ll be looking for lightweight tyres with grip, somehow....probably 2.4 max also

For reasons unknown woke up at 5.30am (always seem to wake earlier on mtb days!) but right away ping, thinking of this tyre grading thing, nearest I could find was this Bicycle Rolling Resistance | Rolling Resistance Tests at one stage it was getting alright traffic but it’s tailed off a lot, I couldn’t find any decent mtb tyres in there tests or anything of use but you get the idea

I wonder if it’s possible for a lab to test bike tyres for multiple things to create an independent study? Be quite a fun thing to try and get involved in.

As far as people testing tyres out this is a pretty excellent study and seems genuine:

well 3 months update assagai 2.5 DD up front and 2.6 EXO on the rear now i know how minner feels when riding corners
super grippy turns which ever way u want it go, quit a fast rolling tyre too but at 1000k and the rear shows sighs of wear maybe will last another month, front is still going strong but some side nobs show stress lines .so far best tires i have had so far

They don't shed mud very well from my experience but i'm also unwilling to swap tyres just for those conditions. I find my assegai's to be very predicatable and grippy but i have my grip balance set the other way with 2.6 front and 2.5 rear (the old front). Bike came set up with 2.5 front and rear but the maxxgrip on the rear which was showing signs of wear after 600 miles of mixed use riding over winter. Also the maxxgrip is like riding with a tyre wanting to go in the opposite direction

Next time i'll likely go 2.5/2.4 as i prefer my rear tyre to be the one losing grip first if one of them does.

I currently run a 2.8 Minion DHR II Exo on my full suss as that’s what came with the bike, but I’m not fond of the wide width, it just feels draggy and cumbersome. I have 35mm internal rims

Not too fussed about maximum grip as I quite enjoy a slidey rear tyre, so after a faster rolling tyre to help increase range. Plus it’s almost summer now!

Looking at the Minion SS, which is described as a slick (ish) centre, but grippy on the corners. Sounds ideal for me

They only come in 2.3 though. Question is, anyone fitted a 2.3 rear to a 35mm rim and if so how did it feel / perform ? Thanks

I'm not going to comment on the tyre itself, but I believe that you will find this chart from WTB to be helpful with respect to the tyre width vs rim width question. The 2.3 width tyre (58mm) to a 35mm rim width is inside the "optimum performance" band.

Thanks Steve, that’s helpful. I’m finding on my own ‘googling’ research that some are saying 2.4 is the minimum recommended size for a 35mm rim, others say 2.3 is fine, hence my question earlier

I know, and that’s the problem, so many to choose from! Originally was about to order e-wild’s as I have some on another bike and really like them, but smallest is 2.6. Then almost went for high rollers in 2.4, but then fancied the SS’s on the narrower 2.3.

I’ve ordered the SS’s now anyway and got them for less than £30 so it’s hardly a big loss if I don’t get on with them

Maybe you can try Maxxis Aggressor 2.5 WT, quite good in the summer time and fast rolling tyre. Good edge grip.

The Maxxis USA site has a chart of recommended sizes: Minion SS | Maxxis Tires USA

Perfect thanks. I took a gamble and ordered the 2.3 SS anyway, mostly to put an end to reading about tyres every evening, although here I am still reading about tyres!

No idea what they're like, but I've abused my winter mud rear Maxxis Shorty to the point that gravel is growing into the knobs!

I wanted the Wild Enduro, but couldn't find the size I wanted.

Who else is going wider? Last july i got a new 2020 Giant E + Stance.
It came with 35mm rims and 27.5x2.6 Maxxis Rekon.
After 3 months i switched to 2.8 and liked it.
Now i am on 3.0 and love it.

I replaced my rear (slashed sidewall) Maxxis Assegai 27.5x2.6 with Schwalbe Hans 27.5x2.8 and I like it!
Interestingly enough the Assegai x2.6 had more grip in deep mud and on loose gravel.
I am told Hans is better on a dry surface. I find it spins easier on loose gravel while climbing uphill, where Assegai wouldn’t lose a beat, but that is additional learning curve for me to learn to control all the power at my disposal

If you feel the need for more grip in front you might try the WTB Vigilante.
In june my new bike will have a front 29x2.6 Assegai so i read about it and
most people are happy with it. If i feel the need for a 2.8 the Vigilante is my choice.

I changed the rear to (Hans) 27.5x2.8.
The front stays on (OEM) Assegai 29x2.6, as it does have excellent grip, where I ride, i.e. mud, gravel, loose leaves and tree-roots, in the woods.

WT is for new wider profile rims. 30mm inner qualifies but thats kind of the tween width. WT might be a bit better on the front to give it more edge but 30mm isnt super wide either. Little more leeway on rhe rear where a bit rounder tire profile is ok
