Hi,

Has anyone done some sensible upgrades and weighed their Reigns?

I know it is a heavey bike and the 750/800Wh battery isn't going to help, but I'm trying to understand if it is possible to get an M sized bike under 25kg with some parts I have at home.

I would fit the 800Wh battery and use a DD/Supertrail/supergravity tyre out back whcih isn't going make things easy.

I have a ~2kg set of wheels from DT swiss (my guess is the stock wheels are very heavy), I would use a high end cassette to drop some unsprung weight, probably a 150/155mm crank. I have some good quality stems and bars in the garage.

Anyone able to say whether the bike would still be north or south of 25kgs?
Cheers

Thanks for the response! Second question, how much space is there between your rear tyre and the frame, do you think you could fit a 29er rear wheel with a smaller tyre (e.g. maxxis 2.3")? Again, I have some nice 29er wheels, I would run the bike mullet most of the time, but would be interesting to be able to fit my carbon wheels with a better rolling tyre on some summer epics.

I expect with skinny tyres they would, but why ? the geometry would be all wrong even with the flip chip turned too low. The Reign is made to be slack. But hay why not ! It is your bike and you should do what feels best !

I put a pair of 190mm Zebs Ulimates on mine Reign E+0 for a test as I have them on another bike. So I thought why not ! Worked really well. Put the 38s back for now !

Reign e+ 1 2022, 750WH Battery, 2,6 Maxxis DD Tires f&r, Carbon Bars, Shigura Brakes with 223/203 Rotors and wrapped with Invisiframe weights 25,5kg with Pedals.
But I like my Trance X Advanced e+ 2 Custom with Carbon Frame also a lot. Weights only 23,4kg with 29" Exo+ Tires + Inserts, and I will add a longer fork and rear suspension soon. For me, it's the better allrounder, but the Reign excels when things gets roudy

My Reign e0 Large 750wh was 25kg with pedals 1,1kg rear/ 1.25kg front tire.(lighter stear/stam seat and dropper) and 3d printed battery lock.
This way it was 0,6kg lighter than ‘22 CF cube w/ 750wh battery same size, same weight used.

Now I have shaved another 500g with lighter battery casing, and switching to 11spd 1195 casette, that is 400g lighter.
So just north of 24kg expected weight.

It weights in at 24.1kg w/pedals 🥳
Alu crancks, two remotes on handelbar.

23.6kg without pedals, and with org. Carbon cranks.

PM me if you are intrested in battery tube(500/625/800wh) and battery lock delete.

Hello Nobrks,

What you have done is an amazing job, I really like it ! Saving so much weight in this part of the bike is something really important.
Since the beginning I found the weight of the battery terrible on my bike. Coming from a Full-E to a Trance-E I have seen the huge weight difference between both batteries, at that time Giant claimed that it was due to a conformity to some safety standard but they were much heavier than all other manufacturers...

I have some questions for you on your work :
1. Do you think those parts are strong enough if you ride hard stuff like jumps with rough receptions ?
2. Now you can not easily remove the battery from the frame, correct ?
3. I haven't tried t open my battery case to look inside. Is it something easy to do ?

Thanks

1. Yes, last year I rode the whole season 1400km with different design of 3d printed mount, that was more more demanding on the material, the new design is simpler and has la lot less stress concentration. Matrial can flex a bit, is not brittle.
I rode a couble of days in bikeparks in Germany and Sweden that are alot more chattering than in Denmark, even got one of the fastest time on Maggan in Vallåsen (youtube).
2. battery is removable, two bolts instead of one in the lock. Takes about 20sec longer to install.
3. depends on battery size, 500/625 easy, 750 easy, 800 has a very tight fit in btw battery and case.

My Giant is a E+1 size M. I've weighed it at 26.5. Mods are the following:
  • 800whr battery
  • DD casing upfront DH casing rear
  • 220 rotors ( will be going back to a 200 in rear with the hope brakes)
  • Hope tech 4 V4
  • Fast Fenix coil shock
  • crank Bros stamp 7 pedals
  • One up adjustable seat post +yep components lever
  • ergon grips and saddle
last mods to come will be DTswiss EX511 front rim on hope pro4 hub and DTswiss FR541 on DT hybride hub.
I've built the bike more for strength and beating of my local terrain. And enhanced its strength. if the same frame was available in carbon, i would buy straight away

I guess i've added 1.5kg in total

Nice. That's a burly build to be fair!

I got mine down the 24.9kg with EX511 rims front and back, slightly heavier than stock tyres, and 11s X01 cassette. But with the 625Wh battery. So I guess 25.5kg is about the averge weight of a solid, high-end build with the 800Wh battery.

24.9 thats good, changing the transmission is actually a good idea because the stock cassette is heavy. And the motor can compensate. I live around Grenoble in France so the bike sees alot of 1000m descentes. Rocky rooty alpine descents are the norm. i guess carbon cranks and bars could also help save some weight.

Size medium with slammed OneUp 210mm dropper, Wolftooth light action lever, rear DT Swiss FR541 laced to Onyx hub, CushCore front and rear, XT spd platform pedals.
Next will be riser bars and a 220 front rotor.
I'd like to lighten it a bit if possible, very interested in the battery housing / locking mechanism replacement above.

So just a quick update, My "heavyish " build has just come back from a week at the Megavalanche, the bike performed flawlessly, no mechanicals. Very reliable and dammn such performance , so it has been mega approved and over took nearly 80 other riders.

The DT wheels are really strong and stiff. I d highly recommend them.
Coil shock i cant rave enough abut it.
ergon GD1 grips did a great job of filteringout the vibrations.
Hope tech 4 V4 brake set up was great for this and limited fatigue in the hands. always a huge reserve of power when needed. The Fox 38 is Oem and did a perfect job. I left the bike in the high setting. its a great downhill machine in these conditions.
