I found a lot of good information on this site that helped immensly in my ebike build. Without this resource of information, I am not sure if I would have even started this project. I have never even ridden an ebike (until yesterday). So thanks so much for the information and motivation. Here's the info and pics on my holiday ebike build.
For my first ebike build, I went with the Defengu E10 frame and Bafang M560 motor with the 840Wh battery. I wanted to build the perfect bike for me, and I think this is it. I stuck with the 150mm frame specs and got the appropriate sized rear shock, and stayed with 150mm for the front fork. I even went for the triple and got a 150mm dropper post. And I had a pre-existing set of 29er carbon rims with DT Swiss hubs.
I did pretty good on some of the pricing since it was pre-christmas/black friday deals.
I've taken the stickers off of the fork and shock. But the fork is the latest RockShox Lyrik Select that I got cheap, so I bought the charger rc2 3.1 damper buttercups upgrade kit and installed that in it. The shock is a Fox Float X Performance Elite Pro.
The 150mm dropper is a OneUp Components V3. The 35mm riser bar is a OneUp Carbon e-bar handlebar. The pedals are OneUp as well.
The 29er carbon wheelset I had on another bike, but they were barely used. They have DT Swiss 350 hubs so they should be good for ebiking. And the steel freehub body for those are easy to get, so I got one (well, I got two since the first "steel" one didn't stick to my magnet so I said "what?") - you want a steel freehub body.
The brakes are Shimano SLX M7120 4 piston, with metallic pads and 203mm rotors.
The drivetrain is the Shimano Deore XT LinkGlide M8130, 11sp 11-50t. With the 38t chainring and 165 cranks to replace the ones that came with the frame/motor/battery kit.
I think I did rather well with the cable management and the small 1/4" braided cable wrap. On the handlebars on the left, I have the brake and dropper lever piggy backed together, and then the Bafang display controller right beside that. On the right I have the brake/shifter and throttle, and then the display near the center (I need to do some mod so I can get that all the way to the center of the big 35mm handlebar). And I have a Garmin mount in the center, but no wires for that of course.
Only a couple of things were tricky with the build. The power switch and charging port are frame mounted, but were not pre-installed in their accociated frame holes. And the small nut for either of those is hard to reach in order to tighten. One is a 19mm and one a 13mm. And a thin open end wrench would be wanted, and some good angled needle nose pliers.
And the part of the cable that goes to the display is probably not going to be long enough for most builds. But I had got the little "canbus disply extension cable" when I had seen that on greenbike. I'm sure someone here had mentioned that, which is why I bought one.
Also two of the screws for the bottom frame cover plate weren't long enough. But I just went to the hardware store for those and is barely worth mentioning. But I did tell Mia.
I put the battery in and everything worked first try! I was extremely surprised. So I hooked up the BESST Pro Tool and set the circumference and tweaked the modes. And since I've never been on one before, I then went on my very first ebike ride. And it was so much fun that I had to go out on another!
51.5lbs with the 840Wh battery installed, ride ready. A little over 42lbs with no battery.
EDIT1: And it seems pretty quiet to me. Even uphill at full throttle doesn't seem loud and whiny at all, just what I'd expect. Actually a whole lot less than I was expecting based on the videos and info I've seen on the web about the M560 nosie.
