I came back from biking only to park my car and find my Topeak Defender XC11 29" had completely broken off the bike.
It looks like it’s broken off at the struts.
The fender seemed fine on the ride, though I did have significant tire-rubbing pre-ride on full-sag and re-adjusted the fender...
I've used Mallets in the past and they're my favorite clipless pedals - loved the additional platform support so you can pedal away and just clip in as you go.
I've moved on since to their platforms (Stamp 3 Large)....which are fantastic. Can't imagine going back to clipless. I've even...
I've got a Large 29 Decoy but haven't weighed it yet and no real mechanism to do so (luggage scale or similar). YT told me estimate about +1 lb per size.
But, having owned Thule Criterium racks before (the Thule Proride XT predecessor), I'd STRONGLY advise against it for a number of reasons...
@Rob Rides EMTB - I've been using Specialized 2FO Flat 1.0 Mountain Bike Shoes. They're not GoreTex but have a fairly repellant shell and neoprene skirt. They do get wet in creek crossings but don't hold as much water as the 5.10s do. They dry out much quicker. Give them a try if you've not...
@Jmorgan95 - YT's 540 wh battery will be just fine for you. I'm 250 lbs and ride with a hydration pack/kit so probably 255-260# on the bike. If I'm flying solo on the Decoy, I usually run down 2 bars (of 5) riding mostly in trail mode over the course of 1-1.5 hrs and 10-15 miles. When I go...
@Camstyn - OMG looks like HomeDepot in that X-ray! That seems incredibly severe for getting back on the bike just 8-10 weeks post-op. My ortho Doc is forecasting no biking until 12 weeks. I'm just 3 weeks post-op now, so it's too early yet to even start PT according to ortho Doc.
Thanks for...
OP here: Currently trying out the Specialized 2FO Flat 1.0 (size 44): Not quite as roomy toe box as the 5.10 Freerider (size 10.5), but much flatter tongue and nice neoprene enclosure to keep out sticks/pebbles/debris. Much quicker drying! Not sure if I'll keep these long-term I need to try...
@YokoOno - I'll take the additional protection since it's such a light package. Even 20% less impact might help, or distribution across the area.
RE: Braces....Do you mean like this one from Leatt? I was thinking of getting that too, more for stabilization.....and a 'reminder' for myself...
@leftside - Thanks for the tip. Looking at their size-chart I think it's going to be a bit too small for my build - but if that's D30-like protection that is a good value.
Currently looking at the Leatt 3DF Airfit Lite Shoulder Tee-2XL. Appears lightweight - and covers mostly just shoulders...
@BTTB - those XION shirts are interesting....and I've definitely been considering adding a layer of shoulder protection. My fall prior to this last one was my left shoulder, so it seems those are the high-likelihood areas I need to protect since I don't do a ton of rock-gardens.
Are the D30...
@SidLawrence - Yowza! So sorry to hear. Yeah these high-speed falls are something....and the speed is just so addictive. Hard not to push limits.
Back on the trails by October? I LOVE hearing that...but I won't assume that's my timeline. There's a 15-mile fun-ride I usually do with my kids...
Yeah...I think you're right. It would be a little like giving away your newly-adopted dog. Who knows maybe I'll heal-up in time for some frozen-ground riding in winter. You never know. I'll gasket-up the battery housing with the neoprene I bought pre-delivery.
Thanks all for wishes and advice. I'm slowly realizing (admitting?) that this may be a long-long recovery road until I'm able to swing a leg over the Decoy again without immediate danger of ruining my surgery. March 2021 isn't out of the question. It's quite depressing as I see other folks'...
@seamarsh - Thanks for that tip! Now I need to go run downstairs and see if my guesswork is anywhere close to Shimano's specs (shifting sure works fine now though).
I had NO idea there was such a thing. I didn't read Shimano's manual because YT didn't put a big "RTFM" sign on that one ;)...
@Sapientiea - I tried to make that distinction in my post but maybe wasn't so clear. Yes, I've heard it's ok to charge to 100% pre-ride, but that I should not: 1) Leave the battery at 100% for a 'long' period of time (whatever that might be - I'm assuming more than a few days) and 2) Don't...
Ditto on the grommets. I use a little soapy spray (SimpleGreen or similar) to lube them, then jam them tight in the frame. Followed by the tiny micro-zip ties. Get it pretty tight, slide up against the outer edge of the grommet, tighten all the way and cut carefully.
Oh, and I just learned...
As some of you read, I had wrecked my shoulder a few weeks ago and off the bike since. During that ride however, even before the wreck, I experienced issues up-shifting (harder) from 7th to 8th gear, or downshifting (easier) from 8th to 7th. Nothing would happen either direction just a...
@bigwaves311 - Dang....I'm surprised. I understand that one's own body is the best protection (esp. back support/flexibility), but I was thinking it would still be of some help to keep things integrated and less likely to get out of shape in the event of something happening. Bummer that it...
