I got these after a similar wound. I hate them! for riding ... but find they work very well when pulling weeds around the house.

You both need nice cheap football shin guards (with intrinsic ankle protection).

When I was looking for knee guards I was wary of the strap type as I thought they'd be uncomfortable (before bought shin guards)- not sure if that's why they are uncomfortable or not in your case.

Inspected my wounds tonight, a week on. My "rambo" :) - the mrs was out - diy shin stitching has done nicely. Hadn't realised how badly I'd bruised the other ankle, which if I'd had my new cheepo shin guards, would have been avoided... I'm happy for the moment and with a Kenevo on the way, accidents are going to be faster and harder ... What else can I protect ...

That said, the g-form ones do still look nice - though no idea if they'd offer better or worse protection or be warmer or cooler.. As an elastic piece round the whole leg they might stay in place better in a catastrophic mega impact rag doll super cartwheel.

For me, it is the upper strap that causes pain. The protection is good, and when they are tight enough, they stay in place. But.... when they are tight enough to stay in place, my legs are not happy.
