Yeah sorry the EW-EN100 just edited my post as I couldn't remember the name of it
So yes...I am pretty sure the en100 doesn’t have the capability...in any case I do have a pc eo2 box and a few bikes with Shimano motors and although I can do updates through the various displays if I want to reset/reflash the motor I always have to go directly through the input on the motor

OK thanks for that I may try the LBS again and hook it up straight to the motor

your LBS will hook you up but just for reference...this is for an e8000 but the process is similar. Its really simple (other than having to drop the motor on the rise).

LBS seems to think it won't work as it wasn't detecting the bike through the junction box anyway. Which he thinks is due to his box not having the latest firmware

I have gone through similar things...it sucks but always gets sorted in the end. It always comes down to the LBS knowing what they are doing...good luck

The shop I bought from are sending me a box out tomorrow so it's getting sent back to them to sort out. Hopefully won't take too long and I'll have to pedal the "regular" bike about for now

Yeah that's what I thought but he just connected it through the EW-EN100 @RickBullotta is that how you did it?

Yes, but that was a normal firmware update, not a bricked device recovery. Read this:

How_to_recover_a_non_working_STEPS8000_system_(eg_from_broken_bluetooth_update).pdf (emax-tuning.com)

Also, if there's a firmware update for your display device or interface device, I would always install that first. A lot of times those include Bluetooth stability fixes.

For a bricked component, I would definitely use the Windows eTube software + adapter box + direct connect to the component.

What version is the firmware of your box Rick is it the latest 3.0.5?

Shimano have a bit of history when releasing new updates that they can be temperamental to install - personally I haven't bothered updating my e8000 in a few years simple because I cant see any benefit in doing so - oddly with mine doing it on an iPad always works, but using the phone would sometimes crash.

I am seriously thinking about taking this stance and simply not bothering to update it

Surely it can’t do any harm can it ?

Can't see it being too much of an issue. Looking at the release notes it doesn't look like anything essential. I'll not be rushing to do it in the future myself over the air. It'll be going to my lbs to be done with the cable

Two eBay sellers will ship to the UK:

PARK LRT-2 | eBay

You can get the Shimano tool from Amazon Prime next day. I did. Rather painful £52 (It's gone down £4 since!)
However, I didn't need it. The motor can be removed without removing the cranks and thus without needing this tool. It's a squeeze, and you'd need 'ball-ended' allen keys and pliers to finish the turns of the bolts. It's tight to get the bolts out, but doable, but I did lose some nice black finish around two bolts. Worth considering if you're stuck.

I have the same error, and have not attempted to install the latest firmware, and I shall not install the latest firmware until I am clear what additional benefit is contained within and whether that's worth the risk. I have a first service included as part of the bike purchase, so may consider handing it to the LBS to update in a couple of months.

My lbs did have a good go at getting the motor out but as you say it's tight getting one of the bolts out on the drive side and he gave up in the end as it was getting towards closing time. I left my bike with him as he has a friend who owns a shop who has the tool and an up to date diagnostic box, so he's taking it over there first thing this morning to try and get it sorted

What was the secret voodoo that was required?
Not sure? Said he hooked his box up to the junction box and straight away it asked if they wanted to reinstall the firmware. He even managed to update his own box using the other guys laptop which has just kept failing on his own pc.

what was the process? did they eliminate the error code?
When I picked the bike up I asked about the error code and he said it had got rid of it and they had updated everything no problem. I got home and connected it to the Etube app on my phone and it was still showing on there so not sure if it's something just to do with the phone app or what??
