Any of you guys swapped the tyres out yet ??

If so what replacements did you go for

Running Assegai front, moved the Dissector to the rear. Probably go with good ol DHF/DHR2 combo when these wear out.

I wanted to try something completely different from normal, so swapped to some Pirelli Scorpion Trail tyres (medium & rear versions) - I kind of like the theory behind the way they only use one compound of rubber throughout - so as it wears down it stays the same. But have to see how they work out when I try some rockier trails in the wet :)

Would like to try some Dissectors at some point - I do like the EXO+ versions of the Maxxis tyres.

I would like to ask about the comfort of riding. It is already known that Rise works well on the trail, but are longer trips (more than 3-4 hours) ok and is the riding position comfortable for such long distance trips?

same basic fit as my Hightower, so I’d say definitely yes. Comfort over a long ride will probably be more influenced by saddle, grips, and bars though.

I have managed to get the rs toolbox on to my Garmin 830 but when I go to use it all it said Is unlock in the Garmin IQ store
No idea why as I think I have done all this

Is this rs tool box any better than the shimano steps screen as if it isn’t I won’t bother and just stick to steps

Managed to get 3 rides on my Rise so far - just road and light trails, but I went for the M-team version with the Fox 34, DPS shock and 2 pot brakes, so it suits the kind of riding I am doing recently. First impressions are it's marginally lighter than I expected for the XL frame, power is slightly higher and battery use better than I expected. Style and build quality are really fantastic. Have to mention the RaceFace components (stem, bar, rims) as these are just amazing quality and style.

Can only compare to my 2 year old E8000 Lapierre AM Overvolt (so that will have battery degradation etc - though I swap between 2 batteries) - and I'm just in the default EP8 profile on the Rise (probably the lower profile 1, but I haven't even connected it to the E-tube app yet to check ...)
  • Almost 8kg lighter than my Lapierre!
  • Trail assist mode on the Rise, feels like Eco on the E8000
  • Boost on the Rise, feels like the high trail assist mode on the E8000
  • There's a particular road hill near me which always uses 30-45% of a 500Wh battery on the E8000 in trail assist. On the Rise I've done the same hill on the way back each time and used 22%, 27%, 32% battery - probably depends on how tired I am, and seems to use more when the battery is lower. But it's definitely using less battery % for the same feel.
Shortest ride was 21km, 500m height (all road): used 28% battery (including 22% just for that hill)
Longest ride 59km, 1200m height (road & forest trail): used 80% battery (including 32% for the hill at end). Took 3h10m, compared to recent times on the E8000 Lapierre of 2h50m and 3h03m - so slightly slower overall, but felt about the same. Rode mostly in Trail then switched to boost for the end.

I've found I needed to put my saddle back (15mm) on the Rise (I'm 6'4" on the XL) due to the steep seat tube.

Had to reset the wire from the cable to dropper post as it became lose after one ride - I think it just wasn't properly seated at the dropper end when it was assembled. Really easy to slide the dropper cable in and out of the frame though without needing to touch anything else like the motor - no way I can do that on my Lapierre.

The 2-pot XTR brakes on 180mm rotors feel a lot weaker than 4-pots on 203mm which I'm used to (unsurprising!) - maybe I'll change these at some point.

The XTR gears shift amazingly well (as everyone seems to say) even under power. But I find myself hating the XTR gear lever ... wondering if it's possible to switch this for an SRAM one ...

On arrival as stock (size XL, with tubes & no pedals):
Weight in packaging: 17.74kg (39.1lbs)
Weight with no packaging: 17.26kg (38.1lbs)

Hey Mark, I went from a Lapierre Overvolt to the Rise funnily enough, great minds ! Agree with your comments though battery life for me is fairly similar to what I was getting with the e8000 so no gains but still happy given the smaller battery. What tyres are you running ??

It can be a bit of a pain to get it set up correctly. The RS Toolbox in just a data field, not an app so you have to set it up that way. There are a couple of threads on this that have some good advice to get it set up. The Garmin app once configured is way better than just using the Steps app.

You have to persevere with connection to Garmin , it's a bit of a PITA but once it's working it displays everything you need and downloads alot of info to Garmin Connect . I've found it's not very consistent at connecting when I want to go for a ride , sometimes it connects to my watch straight away and other times it's switch bike off , exit the Garmin data field etc in no particular order until it connects lol

Supposedly (I haven't tested it) pressing the mode switch button on the EW-EN100 also activates bluetooth pairing/connections - that's what the Shimano Ride app suggested.

Yep good choice :) Just the huge weight difference is worth the change from my point of view! Feels so much more agile and responsive due to that even for the light trails I ride. It feels like your own input makes more of a difference, even going up hill you can pedal harder and feel like the extra effort isn't wasted.

Mine came with DHF and DHR2 which I used for my first 2 rides just to test them. Then I swapped to some Pirelli Scorpion Trail tyres as I'd been wanting to try some for a while but never got around to it with my Lapierre. They're lighter and more trail focused than what I normally use, but I think that kind of tyre suits the riding I'll mainly use the bike for, but we'll see :)

RS Toolbox uses ANT+ unfortunately, so it's a different format from my code. (I use an app called LightBlue which seems good for checking Bluetooth signals). But connecting with ANT+ seems harder than Bluetooth, which might be where some of the connection problems come from when using it.

@JanCapek's Garmin app for ebikes does use ANT though, so maybe he would find it useful to sniff the data ...

Cheers guys for all the advice

So I am going to leave the rs toolbox for now ok and use shimano steps so I have the data screen all set up on the Garmin
The bike is on
But none of the data like battery level of assist mode is actully showing on the Garmin screen how go I get the info to show on the screen

RS toolbox: you have to bite the bullet and unselect/disable/invite the Steps screen for rs toolbox one to own the connection, you cannot have them both.

It means you'll lose the ebike data fields but rs the olbox is configurable through Connect IQ for data fields so it's not too bad.

The main benefit of RS toolbox over Steps for me is the stats that are captured on ebike mode, assistance level, battery level etc in the ride in Garmin Connect.

As said, it's a fricking pain, but keep trying! Once set up, it's very reliable. All this Levo 2022 display features and all I'm thinking is the Garmin which I would fit to any bike anyway, does way more than that in-built processor....

Brakes: Orbea did a deal with Galfer towards the end of last year and XT ice Techs rotors were ditched for Galfer 180mm front and rear. A poor choice in my view. My mate has an 1yr old Occam and the ice tech 180s are fine.

There's enough bite in the rear brake for me, so I left that as-is, but wanted a stronger front brake. Would love Magura MT7s but don't want to spend my life bleeding them, so I stuck with the XT caliper and swapped the rotor to a Hope 230mm and adapter. The result is brutal. Great control, great modulation, loads of power, no noise, £50, 10 minutes and 6 + 2 bolts.

Hi all - would someone mind measuring the steerer tube length? I'm debating b/w the M20 and M10. I've got a Fox 36 laying around, but the steerer tube is cut down to ~165mm and wondering if that would fit. Thanks for the help!

EDIT: I should add that I found a dealer with an M20 in stock but would have to wait 2-3+ months for the M10 so I am leaning heavily towards the M20. For my skill level (not very skilled), M20 is enough bike for me with some minor upgrades such as calipers & rotors (and tires).

You have to be careful with the Rise as the RS versions have the later firmware updates which means it’s harder to erase a trace entry of any intervention. It’s best to change the firmware to an earlier version for the EP8. I would contact Markus at Emax who can give instructions on how to do this either via a smartphone or windows using the PCE1 interface.

Think I will stick with the Garmin wouldnt want to do anything that could potentially cause warranty issue if I had a problem
