I see a whole bunch of obsolete bikes.
Personally i prefer the external battery for simplicity and future proof-ness

Actually, it’s not impossible this leads to a new standard (like the external) of fully internal Shimano batteries if it’s as neat as the Specialized. That then would be just as ‘future proof’, however in reality none of this stuff is even remotely what you’d term future proof ?

Yes, a new standard for the internal would be fantastic. For me, future proof means 'rideable' for 5 years. I'm a bit worried that eBikes will create a huge number of bikes with no upgradeable motors and batteries that will end up in the landfill or sit in garages of no use to anyone. Perhaps my worries are a bit overblown.

But i do look forward to this new internal battery standard and hope that other motor manufacturers adopt it as well, not just Shimano. And that direct consumer brands can focus on the frames and geometry and not worry about creating custom battery packs like how YT and specialized have done. Perhaps Specialized has the inclination and the deep pockets for R&D and the supply chain to keep the product inventory, but i wish the likes of YT and Fezzari etc offer us something that they can guarantee will be around for several years.

Very interesting. The Propain is probably made by one of these kinds of companies (like Apro etc) in China/Taiwan. Specialized are no different, the Levo is Taiwanese after all.

Yeah. Spesh frames will be custom designed to their spec... but I know of another brand that use that exact catalogue frame that I posted ? you’ll likely be able to source all manufacturers down to a few manufacturing companies.

Focus on e-bike frames
Astro’s focus on e-bike frames is no coincidence. The company’s CEO Samuel Hu himself is heavily involved in product development. In close cooperation with Taiwanese battery specialist SMP Simplo Technology, his company created the revolutionary battery ‘Linkage Battery Pack’ also known as ‘Snake Pack System’. This system has been designed to integrate the battery into the e-bike frame. Thanks to its flexibility the integration of the battery inside the down tube no longer requires a large opening. The individual cell packets are connected by joints and thus can be pulled out easily through a smaller opening ‘like a snake’. Thanks to the smaller downtube opening, the frame maintains its stiffness.

I wonder if the Shimano battery is the later cells used by Specialized and YT to get the density up (I suspect not but one can hope).

@Rob Hancill What is that other brand that uses the catalog frame? It's a pretty interesting idea - buy frame and build to your taste. How easy or hard is it i wonder for the average home mechanic?

@Rob Hancill is correct that the battery is already in use, e.g the Fezzari Wirepeak already uses it, and it is the Battery you will find in the soon to be released next gen Merida E-MTB - it is made for Shimano by Darfon, one of the big OEM Oriental parts companies, who are now focused on e-bike tech.

That Propain looks sweet!

This is a good way to get us to empty our wallets until there is a significant motor upgrade in 2020/21 :D

Personally I hope we still see manufacturers with external batteries. It would be great if they increased capacity but kept the same form factor so they could be retrofitted.

Once someone like Shimano comes out with something, they have to support it for a very long time... You can still buy 7 and 8 speed Shimano derailluers and cassettes, octolink bottom brackets and square taper BB's.

Just what i've been observing over the last 15 years, once a major company releases a product, it's pretty much supported well after people move onto something else.

I guess im not too worried that in 10 years ill be able to buy the same battery from Shimano. Maybe in 20 years it will be an issue but by then ill probably have moved onto something else

It was a slightly tongue and cheek comment. Having said that (I’m sure it’s different in the bike world), working in the manufacturing space, we certainly don’t share all our special sauce with our partners, and vice versa. I’m sure they did know but it doesn’t detract from the fact this gives their competitors the ability to provide a similar value proposition.

The difference in the bike industry is there is a bit of a symbiotic relationship between the big bike company and the component manufacturers, as the component companies need to test the product and the bike companies need to plan years in advance in terms of getting a new frame or new standard for a component into production.

That is seriously comforting to know. I'm not too knowledgeable about the bicycle industry. In the motorcycle world, i have no worries about parts in the future because they are so interchangeable across a manufacturer's models and across the industry. I currently ride a 20 year old kawasaki that continues to chug on and every part is still in supply.

Also companies like Shimano have a habit of bringing out newer systems, that sit above the older systems rather than replace them.I suspect Shimano may bring out an e9000 motto for example, but keep the E8000 in production

The new battery is still a tad heavier than the current external one, so its really an aesthetic option rather than anything else - at the moment integrating a battery adds weigh to the majority of frame designs, due to the reinforcement needed.

It will be interesting to see what the bikes using it, such as th Propain, and the new Merida come in a weight wise.

If that Propain gets to 20kg I will be very tempted.

Somewhere on YouTube there is an interview with one of Shimano's designers or something where he talks about their eBike development starting before the Levo came out in 2013. I think he said they started designing their first eBike system in 2009 or 2010 - they had an idea way back then that eBiking would be a thing in the future and a fun way to ride. One of the more interesting comments from him was that they get the system right, because they would have to support it for many years. I wish i could remember the video better, but that's what i took away from it.

I’m looking to purchase the charging adapter in pic but I’m unable to find a part number or name anywhere. Just pics of it. Can anyone advise me?
