Bosch Gen4 motor cover

Smashed the plastic cover yesterday thanks to a lump of slate chucked up from the front wheel.
Looked at Rockguardz but the 2020 cover is a just a little cosmetic thing that looks like a boy racer thing from Halfords.
Any decent alloy bash guards out there??

Good call, I've put a hole in mine as well. I'd prefer a carbon upgrade rather than alloy if there's one out there, cos it'll make my bike lighter ??

I made one for my 2019 Cube. Purchased materials from eBay, costs less than a tenner. You only need a few basic tools, jig saw, grinder, files, drill etc. I removed the plastic version and formed it around that, so if you have some basic DIY skills it shouldn’t be too difficult.

obviously you have a newer version so it will no doubt look different to the one I made, but I can’t imagine the process will be much different.

Admittedly not as pretty as a carbon job, but I quite like the utilitarian look and it works well.

That’s a good job there.
Unfortunately the 2020 motor and frame are completely different insofar as wrapping around the back and sides of the motor. Making a home built bash plate very difficult to make without good fabrication skills (that I don’t have).
I’ve got a replacement plastic guard/cover from Wheelbase at £35!
The guys there said lots of people are asking for a proper bash guard.
Hmmm, maybe it’s time to approach a fabricator.

Something laminated in Carbon Fibre may do it. It would be easier to make a mould / pattern from timber or something machineable. Better than ally as well as all the cables and wires are under there and could get damaged or squashed.
Are there any laminators out there with some time on their hands due to the current situation.
I'm sure there would be a few takers ?

Mine smashed off on the first ride in exactly same place where the bolt is, drilled 2 holes and cable tied it through the 2 bolts hole on the down tube , haven’t had any issues since with 500 miles of riding?

@R80 - Thnaks for the heads up. Looks to be little in the way of an alternative. Shame, i never had anything like this happen with the Levo so never really considered a guard previously

Mine smashed off first ride. £37 to replace (LBS have ordered from Cube so about a week to arrive) and £40 + PP for the Rockguardz. Just want to avoid that flimsy plastic cover smashing off again.

Perhaps Cube should consider something less flimsy for the cover. Would happily pay the extra for something more robust as part of stock bike

bought a rock guards piece of crap .
Broke on the 1st impact going over a log up a hill . [ So not high speed ] Then fell off !

I contacted the seller . He passed on my message to rock guards who said it did its job . LOL .

New version is not in the same class as the previous generation guards . I offered to help R&D a better guard . They asked what I could do ? I said real world testing .
I told them I recommend what I use to friends . And that I couldn`t recommend this product .
They said thanks but no thanks . So they can suit themselves .

So. Bike back from LBS with cover replaced and the Rockguardz arrived today

Fitted on and does'nt seem seem to fit at all. Has a couple of velcro strips but when the guard is on, it forces the wing on the plate open on the side. Remove it and the side of the plate sits fine

I will contact Rockguardsz for their opinion, but at £40 + pp the whole thing seems a bit rubbish. Think i will end up goint for the plat @MitchF suggests

looks like you have the same issue (even without Rockguardz ) as many : the screws went trough the plastic.
you should add some washers under the screws

or use the alu plate from standup (as washer aswell)

Following an idea taken from a previous posting, I ordered a small sheet of 2mm SS tread plate from
EBay - £2.60 incl postage! After a bit of hacksawijg and grinder work, made this plate which I’ve pop riveted to the existing cover, with a layer of thin foam in between. It’s on my 2 month old Cube Stereo. Haven’t tried it yet, but if it puts off the inevitable cracking to the std cover, it’s worth the effort. Not hugely pretty, but when covered in mud, no one will notice

Nice idea, I really would like to do something like this for my own Cube also! Is it easy to remove & install the original cover, just those 4 screws open and that's it..?

I was also thinking if 2mm aluminium plate would be enough, or maybe some 4-5mm PE plastic etc. What do you think?
