I would have no confidence in going on a long ride far from home on that bike.
And yours is definitely NOT! :(
It does not sound fit for purpose to me.
Check that the 29" rear wheel will actually fit into the frame (usually no probs with the front). Allow for sideways flex. Allow for wider tyres that you may fit. It's not just the cross brace that you need to check, but the clearance with the seat and chain stays as well.
Also allow for the...
It doesn't look first rate, that's for sure. :(
But why did you send a mucky bike off for a service? It can't set the mechanic's mind up well when starting off with a bike that he has to clean before he makes a start.
It sure is loud compared to my Shimano EP8, as well as yours @Haveland.
(I mentioned "Shimano" specifically as an antidote to the Shimano comments made about its alleged noisiness).
I suddenly developed a click when riding over rough ground. The click frequency was in proportion to the speed I was riding at. My first suspect was the headset, so I stopped and did the usual checks, and some unusual ones too! Then I thought it might be the axle (nope), then the pedals (nope)...
I had a Shimano e8000 motor for 2.5 years and I've had a Shimano EP8 for 2yrs 8 months. Both faultless and I've ridden through every winter (in the UK). I don't ride through streams deeper than the motor (like some do) and I don't use even a hosepipe (like some do), let alone a jetwash!! I do...
I was reading of an attempt to landsail across the Patagonian ice cap. Guys with sledges, towed by sails. They were in their tent riding out a storm when the author got a serious urge for a dump. It was a howling gale with ice crystals and everything so he took a shovel and dug a trench at right...
Not according to the long-range weather forecast! It looks like there is a conveyor belt out in the Atlantic bringing an endless supply of rain for as far ahead as can be seen. It will still be raining in the Summer, but at least it will be warm!
I have always had what I refer to as "mechanical sympathy". Because of it I simply cannot change gear under load. I have never broken a chain whilst pedalling, no matter what terrain I'm traversing. But I have broken chains, two of them! Both were when the mech scooped up a stick of one kind...
That is a risk too far for me. I reckon the top cap has such small flats that all six flats are required to loosen them. Two flats is 2/3 too few.
That sounds like a correct figure to me. However, I remember clearly that it was 40Nm on the Pike that I first removed the top cap. I remember it because I thought it was a stupidly high figure. 40Nm is the same as for a bottom bracket or the cassette lock ring, but they well designed for the...
