Hmmm, I may have mislead you. Try the drive-side cover. There is a big ole two-wire connector under one of them. I may have remembered which side it is in a wrongly way.
Take the left side motor cover off, the connection is in there.
Let it charge for 6-7 hours before you determine if there is a problem with the switch. On mine, the light on the charger goes off when it's done charging.

You mentioned charging until "the light stayed on". On mine, the light comes on when it starts charging, and then it goes off once it's fully charged. Just sayin'. That's the charger light I'm talking about while charging the battery in the bike.
