On my Stance, if in auto mode, pressing either up or down button gets you out of auto mode.
To get back in I think you just press and hold either the up or down button.
No way is that normal, and shame on them for saying so.
I had a Fathom for 3 years with zero issues, and now my Stance trouble free for 3 years.
If you have the app, is there an update you can do? Did the LBS do any updates?
Do not take that LBS response as true, it is most certainly not!
I have heard numerous horror stories of Giant/Yamaha motors needing replacement after a short time using an unlocker.
This on recent bikes/firmware.
I have a 2021 and definitely will not try my luck.
YMMV...
I found the auto mode to be a battery hog, and kind of "Surge-ish" feeling, ie less natural feeling.
I went into the app and maxed out levels 1, 2, and 3. Like you I never found a use for level 1, but now it's all I need on flats and minor inclines, level 2 can easily handle larger inclines, and...
Ah, OK. Sounds like you may need to increase your cadence as @jeanmarc alluded to above perhaps.
Same thing happens on my Stance if my gearing is wrong.
Each level of assist (of 5) will only provide "X" amount of assist.
So for example in level 1 it is only going to add 50% of your effort or so. Can't remember the exact amounts for each level.
Level 2 will provide 100%, level 3 at 175% etc.
You can see what these levels are exactly in the Giant...
Not sure if this is the exact fork, but check what fork you have and go here...

Are you charging the battery in, or out of the bike? Can you try both?
From the manual...
5.3.14444Use of the chargers
4A charger
• EnergyPak not connected:
Charger LED (A) is green (constant).
• During charging:
Charger LED is red (constant).
• Charging issue:
Charger LED is red (blinking).

Yup, that's the right one for sure.
Well I'd reserve opinion until I saw the specs in the app.
If the bike shows zero/few kms, and the battery is fresh I could get over the paint...
