There have been many post since 2019, when I joined this forum, about water ingres and battery fitment. Other than the rubber splash guard, extending below the battery interface, Giant hasn't fixed anything about it, that I can tell🤯

In 2020 on the Reign, and then in 2021 with the X, Giant made it worse adding holes for cable routing that leak directly above the battery terminals. They solved one issue, terrible cable routine leading to poor shifting, but created even more places for water to enter the frame.

The biggest trouble, may be that the harness itself is not sealed. Water works up inside the harness, and from there, back doors into the connectors.


As adequate avoidance to ride ending water ingress, I tape up the harness, use dielectric grease, avoid the hose, and dry the bike with a fan after each wet ride. It's part of the deal, as Giant try to figure out what Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Polaris, name 100 others figured out aeons ago, its part of the weirdness of bicycle DNA and its painful.

going off the limited pictures, there are 2 areas of concern for me. The first is the tube status indicator, not being mounted on top of the frame (alla specialised), won’t water just seep around the sides and into the frame and electronics assembly (if not properly sealed)?

Secondly you can see from this pic the crud collection point at the base of the battery leading to the motor entry point. If this doesn’t get properly sealed up that’s a world of pain right there! @Pudding have you any more wet riding experience with the Reign that you can expand on please bud? Hopefully no issues encountered! Also how easy is it to get the battery out and that area cleaned? Cheers

This is my first Giant eMTB, but I still think people are freaking out here about hosing the bike.

It's quite muddy here at this time of the year, and each ride the bike gets dirty. Hosed down the bike a few times without any issues so far. Local bike shop even told me to hose that thing pretty much like a regular bike.

If it goes wrong, I'll bring it back to the bike shop that's why I bought it new...peace of mind bike is on a 2 years warranty.

Regarding the flip chip, you guys should flip that thing to the high position as soon as possible otherwise pedal strikes are going to be frequent on any ride with a few roots/rocks. I did notice a little difference and would prefer riding in the low position, but these pedals strikes were nasty with the BB being 10mm lower.

I rode a total of 70km this weekend, bike is freaking awesome, geometry is on point. Bike is easy to maneuver/whip in the air, super nimble. Motor is awesome. Being 260lbs, my max range with the 625wh battery is pretty much 30km and 1000m of ascent and that is climbing most of the stuff on sport mode (level 4)... pretty sure I could stretch the range if I was not cranking the power as much.

I’ve had about 13-14 rides on it since I got it, I’ve hosed it off every ride so far because the trails are always muddy here at this time of year. The battery compartment is pretty wet, which it shows from the pictures, I even removed the bracket that holds the top of the battery in to check for lighting wires and it was wet up there which supports the idea that water could get around the top tube controller or through the cable ports. I haven’t had any issues with the bike turning off or any of the other things people have mentioned with the older models. I’m trying my best to put the bike through its paces, I’ve never had an ebike before, but I love it so far. I don’t find the pedal strikes to be any less than my other bike, I’d say it’s a pretty common issue with most long low and slack bikes these days. The battery is pretty easy to remove, loosen The screw at the top of the battery cover and pull it off to expose the battery. Then use a t25 to loosen the battery holder at the top, not much different than others I would imagine except this one doesn’t have a key.

flipchip changed to high, this weekend I try it, you wanted to change it, 64.5 ° is still a good angle to go down, to see sensations and above all to go up that precious 1 cm

I suspect it's your technique, or lack thereof.

BB drop, even in the low position, is higher than all the similar EMTBs in this category that I have my eye on. In fact, in the low position, it's 36mm higher than my enduro analogue which I pedal everywhere.

I just got a confirmation of shipment for my Reign E+1 625wh. Got a pretty outstanding deal with 10% discount. Looking forward to finding out if mine suffers from water ingress issues and how is measures up to the Trek Rail.

You're right that technique can make you avoid most of the strikes, however in the low position I had to be more careful in certain sections of my local trails where I was just flying with my regular Reign 29 with a 346mm BB, which is now not a problem anymore in the high setting.

1cm can make a huge difference regarding pedal strikes.

Im in Switzerland but purchased the bike from an Austrian store. They had it in stock and have a 10% discount offer on all bikes. I thought it was a bit of a scam but today it has been dispatched 🤞

This website is great - I've chucked in the figures for the latest E Trance and Reign but you can play around with it.

I went from a reign E+1 2020 to a 2022 model.
I ride on and around 'terres noires' of Provence.
My level is just average.
But i can say that 2022 reign E+ is an absolute blast, a major upshift (and not 'only' an overhaul from the old model).
Geo is incredibly good, from my point of view (2022 size M : reach from size M of 2020, and toptube from size S of 2020).
Motor is even better, especially on steep rocky uphill.
Going downhill is also better : the bike is stable and maneuverable (flipchip on 'high', cause i didnt like the bike on 'low' ).
About combination of smaller motor and 29er frontwheel = no more hits, both up or downhill (bike doesnt hit rocks anymore, everywhere the 2020 model did).
Range feels about the same, may be better (i ride on smartassist fulltime, best option for me around there).
My feeling is that Giant achieved a masterpiece of EMTB. And despite the 'industrial' and bulky look from diagonal tube, i feel like it's lighter than my 2020 E+1 (despite the 2022 being heavier).

Initially, i bought it because all RM for 2022 were already sold to shop (and my local LBS being unable to get one).
After 500 km on my E+1 2022, i'm no longer sure that i will sell it and try to grab a RM powerplay 2023.
I dont say my giant is better. But for my skill level and considering that the limiting factor is actually me, and not the bike : i may keep it way longer than initially planned.

And again : the giant version of the pw-x3 is a true monster. I've read it was louder, but it's not the case for me. It's more quiet, and delivers much more assist in extreme situations / when needed.

The bike isnt perfect. But for my skill level and the paths i ride, it is. And i feel like i'm far from reaching half of its limits !

And now : time for ride !

I can't reply to the question, because my experience with trek Ebikes is very poor.
I understand! :) My options right now is Reign E+, Rail and Nduro. Best would be to test them all but I have no one of them to test anywhere close :(. Rail is the secure card but Reign is looking very good for the price. Nduro is a wild card. Amazing specs for the price. Dropper insert length and weight is my two reservations on Nduro.

Insert length for the Nduro is only 210mm. My current bike has 220 (in practice it's more). Oneup dropper has the shortest insert length at 267mm (180mm). My fear is that the dropper would be to high in the low position.

Giant reign E+ has no official insert length on the page but it looks like it could be slammed all the way in.

Would like to connect a light from previous bike ( Fathom ) a Lezyne macro drive 1000 . I know how and where to connect but how do you turn it on and off with new controller.

I will have both when my Reign arrives so I will be able to give you a good comparison in the not too distant future. In terms of spec though, the Trek cant touch the Giant at the same price point. The Bosch motor is awesome though so the Yamaha has a lot to live up to. Also have a much lower entry point into the 750wh battery if that is a factor. I went with the 625 because I was impatient. I am hoping the range is at least as good on the Giant as I get decent range with the Trek but would not want it to be any less.

Will be interesting to hear! If the Trek just was better priced I would get it. Been keeping an eye out for a used or new with discount Trek Rail 5. Immediately remove all crap parts and upgrade. Would cost around 2000 euro.

They are at opposite ends of the same category.

It sounds like you need to have a think about where you ride, how you ride and what you are really looking for out of an EMTB.

Comparing specs or trying to find the best bike without trying to understand their handling characteristics seems like a good way to make a bad choice. Though, if you mostly ride sitting down through blue and green graded trails, it probably doesn't matter what you buy - in which case I'd suggest the cheapest bike with a motor.
