I think it is even more astonishing that Steve can remember where he dug them. He's got a remarkable memory.
He was known as "Sergeant Short Handle" .. he always failed to secure his shovel to the back of the wagon properly. It would drop down and drag along wearing the handle shorter ...Steve was ranking Sergeant Major, at the time
