This was already mentioned in german forum. It seems, that all Experts have this gap... mine included.

Don’t think mine has that gap. I’ll check.

Mine has it, and so does my Stumpjumper.
I’ve seen other bikes with it too.
As long as there’s no play in the headset I’m sure it’s not a problem.

Well I’m quite surprised by these responses. I’ve sent a quick email to Specialized. Interested to get to the bottom of this. Safe to say the gap is triggering a bit of OCD in me...

You just need to make it a feature with the correct sticker :

No way its meant to be like that, that's just not how you put a headset together, doesn't appear to be like that on the press bikes from the launch, to me it looks like the bikes been put together by someone who has never fitted a set of dual crown forks before

This is interesting to me too as I'm looking at getting the Kenevo Expert at the moment. But I've built many bikes over the years and I don't think you should ever have a gap between the cartridge bearing, compression ring and the top seal.

It will just let water and grime go straight into the headset and ruin the bearings I'd have thought.

thanks for reaching out. Not sure what the issue could be there, but I recommend bringing it into your local Specialized dealer and have a mechanic take a look at it. It should be something simple with an easy fix.

Didn’t really help apart from him confirming that it doesn’t look right. I wrote back asking for a bit more assistance, as I got nowhere with the local shop.

Still waiting on an answer from Specialized Germany.

I have a small length of fishing line in my bag.

Berkshire Cycles also confirmed that they all have this gap. Very strange. If anybody can think of a reason for it (other than to store your fishing line ?) I’d be very interested to know.

Can anyone comment on whether the below ~1mm gap in the headset is normal?

After querying it with the shop they said that ‘they’re all like that’ but they did let it out of the workshop with a steerer tube spacer missing and therefore some noticeable play in the headset, so I’m a bit reluctant to just take their word for it...

It doesn’t push down any further, as the compression ring is pronounced and stops this.

With my cane creek 40 headset on the analogue bike everything sits flush.

Mine had the gap. played with spacers and got rid of it. I am afraid it is just bad set up, but a really easy fix

I don’t think this is the case. Can’t imagine so many bike shops making the same mistake. I’ve also had mine in bits a couple of times and cannot see a solution. Nothing to do with the steerer tube spacers. It seems to be the compression ring.
