Motor updates

Would not updating the motor stop the software communicating with the motor eventually ? Iv been told this by two e bike mechanics.

Why should it?
I have updated my laptop countless times and it still works.
It is only software - it's not like you are physically hitting anything with a large hammer.

Which motor? On the shimano you have to make sure that all the components are updated (controller, battery, and motor) to ensure they work with each other - a Steps motor that hasn't been updated sine 2018 for example won't work with an E7000 mode controller
