I think the main bearing has failed in my CX.
I’m having to take a half day on Wednesday to take it back to the shop and get it checked. Here’s hoping the warranty process won’t be too drawn out or painful.

Cheers. I’ve heard the warranty process is pretty easy, just hope it doesn’t take too long.

It's definitely dead. Bike is back with the supplying dealer who reckon it will be a 2-3 day turnaround. They are also servicing the bike because it looks like the rear hub has failed as well. :(

The Warranty process for Bosch has really improved now that Magura have taken over the claims process. All you need is original sales receipt and the claim will go through quickly, the longest part is usually for the motor to be posted. Shipping can cost about £60 but hey you get a new 2 years warranty aswell

That’s a pretty good turn around.

So, 9 days later, I’m back from my brownie point earning trip to Barcelona for the wife’s birthday and my bike is...

...still bloody broken.

The bloke working on it is on his day off and hasn’t left any updates on the warranty paperwork. It’s not looking good for the weekend.

I’m bloody fuming. I’ll bet they would have fixed it ages ago if I was paying for it. ???

I am also waiting for a new bosch motor, the turn around is usually only a few days, but I believe last Monday was a Bank Holiday in Germany and everything fell behind. Still no excuse, I wanted to be out on mine the weekend too

Same happened to me - both mine and wife's bike when he had Trek Powerflys. Took about two weeks to get the new motor. Neither bike had more than 400 miles on them. Must have been a duff batch of bearings

Apparently I should be getting the bike back next week. They are awaiting the delivery of the replacement motor (which has taken so long because of computer troubles so they couldn’t do a diagnostic report) but they are also waiting for a response from Trek about the rear hub, freewheel and frame bearings as they are all knackered too.

Yaaaay! It's done!

I missed a call earlier today and they were good enough to leave an answerphone message. The bike is ready to collect but no word on the damage to my wallet, hopefully it's all been warrantied...

I have heard that the problem with the CX drive side bearing failures is very likely caused by the build up of crud on the inside of the plastic motor cover, over time this gets slowly chewed up and is forced into the bearing, a bit like a meat grinder.

As every single CX owner I know (six now in total) has had a motor replaced, all except mine and my brothers Lapierre's that don't have covers on the drive side.

May well be something in this theory.

I think it's caused by the chain guard, I'll be dumping it on the replacement motor.

It liiiiives...[/maniacal laughter]

New motor fitted, along with rear wheel bearings and freehub, plus pads front and rear and a service. All for the cost of the pads.

I asked about greasing behind the seal and they seemed to think it wasn’t a user serviceable item... hmm...

For my own piece of mind I removed the drive side crank and popped the seal off.

There’s more grease than the original motor but I still packed it out as per the instructions that came in the kit from Bosch.

You’d have thought the bike shops would have a couple of spares in stock then it’s only a phone call/email to Bosch for them to authorise it. Then slow time the bike shop orders another motor, I don't understand why companies wait for the parts to arrive. It’s not just bike shops it’s all areas. They certainly don't have the same ethos as Specialised.
