Whenever you change out a part and the results are not as you would expect, it's a good Idea to reinstall the old part and confirm that nothing else has changed.
Yes when I have to original sensor hooked up I still get the erratic speed readings. But with the new sensor I get no speed readings, just 0.0 on the display.
Proper troubleshooting practice aside, did you check the magnet? That's something to look at. If I'm not mistaken, the sensor is a simple reed switch. You can check it with an ohmmeter while it's on the bike. Watch the reed switch open and close as the magnet moves in proximity to the sensor. First check the connector on the sensor when it's disconnected. If all is good, check it again when it's hooked up to the motor. This should give you some insight as to what is working and what is not.
I have tried it with the both the magentic on the disc and with an external magnet. Again no readings with the new sensor. I am not sure how to test it with a multimeter without cutting the cord. The plug itself is so small I cannot get the two contacts from my multimeter inside the plug to test.

I am thinking maybe the new sensor I bought was faulty. I'll order another one but it takes a couple weeks to get here, for some reason the only sensors I can find are coming from the UK and I am in the US.

Call or email Shimano's SoCal office. They might be able to help you out.

OK so an update on this. After changing both the sensor and the magnet, YT contacted Shimano and warrantied me a new motor. Thanks YT customer support! I put the new motor in and every has been working fine for about 600 miles but now I am getting E101 errors now. The last motor had 430 miles on it when I warrantied it. The behavior this time is different then on the last motor. The last motor was erratic speed readings causing the motor to kick on and off. This time the speed reading is 0 the motor does turn on but low power. Although different they both are related to the speed sensor. Is this a thing with the EP8 motors? is the speed controller in the motor, not the sensor on near the magnetic, known to fail in these motors?
I am going to check connections and wiggle wires later today and see if that helps. It sucks that on the Decoy you have to take the chainring and chain guide off and drop the motor to get to the speed sensor connector.

I suspect that it is the build of the bike and not a fault of the motor. I have not heard of this being "a thing" with EP8 motors. I've done almost 3200 miles on mine and zero problems. I did almost 3500 miles on my e8000, ditto.

Looking at the /Shimano/Motors page is the right place to be and did you find anything similar? (I haven't looked).

Best of luck with your problem. Please let us know how you solved it in the end. :)

Are you sure it’s E101 ? As that’s not a normal code as there is W101 or E010.
