So difficult. Difficult enough for any citizen to endure the smoke, the stress and the underlying fear. More difficult for those who read & understand the causes of the threat. Even more difficult for the volunteer firefighters critically under-resourced & crippled by political ineptitude & self service.

One more thing and it’s a big one - optics say a lot. What does it say about us when we celebrate with fireworks ?

A national fleet of Bombardier CL-415 Super Scoopers for a fraction of the cost of a new stadium or war memorial installation maybe??

Train & utilise commando units for ultra rapid response & fire suppression ??

we've been evacuated from our home at Mallacoota we can see the approaching fire only by the huge column of smoke and falling ash , we have just got out before the roads were shut now in Eden NSW and the road in the opposite direction cut by fire at Brown Mountain

It’s heartbreaking to see the destruction in beautiful Mallacoota. I know it will be rebuilt more resistant to bushfires and its beauty will be restored. I hope the new year will bring health and renewed happiness to all in Mallacoota & to all communities that have suffered similar devastation.

we were evacuated out of our home town ' Mallacoota 4 days back to Eden on the NSW south coast , today we were evacuated from there in 1 of the biggest mass evacuations Australia has ever seen 10's of thousands of holidaymakers and residents we travelled through burnt out small towns and forest/farmland in thick smoke all day ,we are being told it could get worse before getting better....even Thredbo will be evacuated in the morning.....this summers not going to plan .

Thanks for the updates. Glad to hear you're all safe, even if the circumstances are unimaginably bad.
thanks zimmer , yeah its really bad here and when you think it can't get worse another 40 +plus weekend comes at you still cant believe the evacuation we were in today from the south coast of NSW 10's of thousands of people cars caravans and boats 1 direction and fires services and fuel tankers to fill the service stations and evacuees vehicles that ran out of fuel the other.

Sadly it all sounds quite apocalyptic, made even worse by the fact that it's such a beautiful country, must be heart wrenching and terrifying at the same time.

So if they moved you up the coast to Eden and they've now moved you out and Thredbo is due to be evacuated, where are they sending everyone ??

No beer tankers ? ;)

Shit. It sucks.:(

holidaymakers which there are thousands of mum dad and the kids back to their homes usually Melbourne , Sydney the only way out is through Canberra as many roads closed by fire locals or people like us that have already been evacuated many towns have set up evacuation centers too Eden opened up two footy fields couple days back we will probably hang in Cooma or head into Canberra unsure we have a small convoy 3 adults and some friends kids with us not sure when we will get home road in may take 1-2 weeks to repair ,my home town is currently being evacuated by navy landing vessels out to larger navy ship and by helicopter ,we only have 1 road in and its damaged after the fire hit

Chuffin' eck! That is really bad.

Deep deep sympathy and commiserations. This level of reporting has not hit the UK news yet. Yes we know about the fires, the deaths, the impact upon the wildlife, and the individuals seen looking at their burned out homes. But nothing, nothing at all, about mass evacuations.

Edit: I Googled it and it was all over the internet, I must have had my head up my arse to have missed it!
Later that evening, the BBC news mentioned compulsory evacuations; about time!

My friends down in Melbourne said the smoke is in that area now, down on the Mornington Peninsula it's supposed to be even worse.
Stay safe chaps and chapettes.

The Mallacoota navy evacuation made it onto the UK news :

www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-50975266

some heckling of the pm ...

And the pictures page :

In pictures: Latest from the Australian bushfires

There's footage getting around on facebook of him grabbing some poor womans hand for a photo opp whilst she berates him.

Credit to the moron, though, it was brave of him to visit Bairnsdale yesterday - there's lots of cfa 4x4's with bull bars he could have been strapped to "how the rest of us holiday...."

Yes huge thanks to NZ, Canada & the US for sending your fantastic firefighters! I have the greatest respect for all firefighters. They all deserve recognition of the highest order.

Times like these reveal the authenticity of national leaders and it was clear from the very start that Jacinda Ardern is the gold standard. It's clear that Scott Morrison has failed every test abysmally and is now the textbook on how not to lead. Once this is over, we need to dramatically change our political landscape.

Please keep updating on your situation. Respite here in northern NSW could be the best possible option.

Brings a new meaning to being a grey nomad!

We're just to the west of the east gippsland fires, ( maffra) all the relief centres / showgrounds etc are filling up yet our little town is empty ( just a bit clise to the great divide to be a refuge) . Watching the migration+/- your posts has confirmed that when we get the evacuation order I'll try and hook up the camper ( time permitting) .

Hang in there, you live in a magical place and hopefully it'll still be there when this is over.

we stayed in Cooma in our travelling gypsy convoy , we have been in motel in Cooma understaffed for fires a possible ember attack and the huge influx of fires sevices, technicans etc that are needed ,l have forestry background , partner hotel/motel management another of the group a chef ,we offered to help .Fire hoses rolled every bin bucket and even big tin ashtray filled withwater , 5 other guest shown what to do if shit hits the fan and when to go if gets too much, fuck me its been a hard year so far .Must admit when the afternoon turned turned pitch black at 4.00 the wind started roar and the fire trucks up and down the street were roaring lights and sirens l was concerned but we hung in, the town is covered in inches of ash, burnt leaves, minimal embers .It has been a hell of a day yet again in Australia huge fires l don't know just how to describe the size and ferosity that many communities have endured are in trouble and will be for some time. Many Australians are in all sorts of trouble, many will give support

Things just keep getting worse sadly
Here is the offical BOM weather reading from Kangaroo island as the fires past at 4:10pm

Temp of 99.9 degrees C, with a feels like temp of 428 degrees C and a wind speed of 89kmh. That’s just insane and the sort of conditions faced by those fighting the fires.

I love Australia but its really pushin the friendship ,last night in Cooma was pretty scary but we got through no ember attack just a huge ash storm lots burnt leaves and black skies. When things had settled and calm returned then the Cooma town alarms sounded emergency services vehicles lights and sirens returned to the main street ,Cooma's main concrete water tank had cracked inhalf on the hill sending 4.5 million litres down the hill collecting 2 houses damaged many and collected a few cars , only 1 injury , the amazing thing with all this is going fatalities are still low

I know what you mean but cannot imagine how you feel. Beyond physical & emotional exhaustion I have no doubt. You sound super strong & resilient despite it all. Stay safe.
