Dengfu E05 - Bafang M600 Build

Folks from USA can’t get the E10, so I thought my next best option is the E05. I pulled the trigger mid-July and got the frame and the rest of the stuff 5-6 weeks later. I like the look of UD carbon fiber, so I thought I’d leave it but when I saw it, it’s apparent it needed some cover. Heard good things about Montana Gold (they suck, stick with Rust-Oleum or Krylon) so I got a couple of cans and a few Spray Max 2k. I used Spray Max before and I can tell, they’ve been better.

A few rants about the frame: Plenty of sharp edges, quite a bit of unbonded carbon fiber on the inside. The seat stay is so thin, I seriously doubt it will survive any jumps. The 2-piece that locks the battery in place is plastic. Would be nice if these were aluminum. I filed some of the sharp edges and put mastic tape on the others.

On the bright side, motor fit is great. There’s a channel for the cables to run through - I’m on the fence on this one as it did make the installation a bit more complicated than necessary. If I saw the LightCarbon LCS004 first, I would have went with it. Maybe Dengfu makes great E10s because they have contract with Luna, but E05 definitely leaves a lot to be desired.

It took me a day to design and cut the stencils and sand the frame. Painted the base coat, remove the stencil an hour later, waited at least 24 hours to wet sand, then put on 3 layers of 2k clear gloss. I waited 3 days to wet sand, compound and polish. Took me a day to put together yesterday and I torqued it to specs and took it out on a short 10-mile test ride today, which used up 8% of the battery. It was really nice, no clik-clak, no creaks, no cracks (so far). I still need to tune the 160mm Lyric RC3 fork and the 185x55 Super Deluxe Select shocks. Typical complaints about the motor, which you’ve all heard, so not gonna repeat it. I wish it could be tuned like the BBSxx motors. It has the plastic gear, I was hoping for a metal gear.

Here’s a few pics of the Eclipse Mach1:

I took it out on another short 16 mile ride. Most of it were relatively flat, with at most 3% grade, then took it to a short steep of about 70% grade hill, 591ft. Over 800+ feet. It isn’t much but it’s my first ever climb of this high, and with just 36T at the rear, I had to put it on PAS7. I remembered to be low and close to the handle bar on ascent, and be behind the seat on descent but I forgot to set the shocks and suspension. With 0% skills, it was scary going downhill and almost took a spill when I hit a patch of super loose gravel. It was intense, I’m so glad I was able to recover. I think I need a better front tire than the Maxxis Ardent.

All these used up about 32% of the 14A/672wh battery. A little bit too much, I think. I hope it’s just the battery leveling itself. I didn’t bother to look at the wattage being pulled, but I was mostly on PAS1/2 and PAS7 about the last 50% of the climb. On the flats, I can feel the motor stop assisting when I hit certain speed, which I liked.

Here’s a few more beauty shots

great project MTB Eclipse
I have the same frame but I am missing components to be able to mount it, one question, how about closing the battery?
It seems that in a jump the battery will come out
I find the closure unsafe for a bike designed for mountain riding. the wheels are 29 or 27.5?

You have to slam the battery in order for the locking tab(boss/stud) to click in place. You’ll hear a distinct click. That’s one of my issues with this frame, the retaining ends and caps are plastic, it’s hard to trust it. Notice the Velcro strap on the downtube? That’s my security net.

It’s 27.5. I was gonna go with 29er, but I’m running 160mm on the front, so stand over clearance is cutting it close.

Hopefully you’re not missing parts of the frame. Dengfu sent an extra bag of screws. That bag has the correct screws for the motor bottom cover. Had me scratching my head, and had to get a couple of longer ones before I noticed the extra bag.

What do you think about that seatstay member? I really think it’s too thin. It will take me sometime to muster the courage to go over some potholes, which, unfortunately, is plenty on my neck of the woods

@Eclipse MTB What an awesome build. About to get my hands on E05 frame soon. I was just wondering about the frame and its wheesize that does dengfu really have two different frames for each 27.5 and 29er wheels? I couldn't find any difference between listed E05 frames on aliexpress. The only option at moment on making the purchase was to get 29er frame which in product description even says 29/27.5 (and the descriptions on aliexpress are mess).

Did you specifically get 27.5er frame or is the frame same between 27.5-29 and you decided to go with 27.5er afterwards?

I tried to order an E10 but could not. Like you, I will go with the E05 frame.

Can one of you that has an E05 please measure the dimensions of the battery compartment and/or the battery? I would like to make my own battery.

Thank you.

It's our LCES004, not Dengfu E05, and if only have the size of battery box, you can make a box and install it?

No its not the LCES004- the first poster clearly states its the Dengfu E05. I am also looking at your frames. And yes, I can make a battery. I made a few of them for my other ebikes.

Measures for the E05 battery compartment:
Height: 370mm
Width: 82mm
Depth: 71mm

These are not be the most accurate ones since I'm on the road and don't have a calliper.

Forgot to post my build here previously but here are some pictures. The E05 with M600 has done well for these past months after riding over 1000km. Only issue has been the derailleu hanger (broke once) which I highly recommend to buy as spare part from ebay. Have been riding the 627Wh battery for long as 60 to 70km per charge depending on the assist level. With 27.5er wheels there's some pedal striking on tight corners because of bafang 170mm cranks.

Overall great frame but don't they start selling the E10 with Rob's factory painted colors? He did a youtube video recently about that

Hi- Thank you for the measurements and pictures! Nice ride. What size front fork are you using? I wonder if a 180mm 27.5 fork will work up there. Also was thinking of sizing down on this frame.

Sure will work. I went with cheaper 130mm Judy Silver fork but might upgrade it to 170mm next year. I can also take more measurements if needed whithin the next couple of days.

Made this Dengfu E06 (same battery as E05)

Made a 14S5P. It's a tight fit in the case.
