If your shifting is getting a bit notchy or suddenly needs adjustment you might check the cable housing end cap at the rear derailleur. The plastic one that came on the XT derailleur of my 9.7 cracked. Replaced it with a metal end cap.

It sounds like you may be referring to the small screw and plate that retain the axle nut in the fork. You can loosen it for fine adjustment of the rotation of the nut to precisely position a lever type axle. Tightening the axle will hold the nut in place. You don’t need to adjust it for an axle...

I’m not sure how large the swivel foot on your CWP7 tool is, but it may just be going into the spindle hole. The Park Tool CCP4 has a large enough swivel foot to engage on the spindle allowing the tool to pull the cranks off. Recommend torque is high at 40-45 Nm so it could just require more...
