How much distance have you put on it? I did bit over 500km on mine while I had it, and the funny noises did seem to lessen a lot, though not completely disappear.
Yeah I can't believe they gave it me over the less-than-full-refund I'd have been completely happy with. At the end, just selling the EXe with 1st owner warranty would have made me OK. Trek head office (not my LBS) just wanted me to be happy on a Trek. Kudos to them it'll be very easy to stick...
Yeah that's where I hoped the discussion might go, why... It actually happened kinda suddenly.
Honestly I can't really fault the EXe. I don't think mine was quite as silent as others say theirs are to be honest. It was very "trail" though. Kinda seems to me like the ebike equivalent of a down...
All right well this is post I didn't expect to be making and I'll be eating some of my words here, please pass the condiments.
So I reached a point where I felt "meh" about going out on the bike. This is a bit over 5 weeks in with the EXe. Frankly, my finances aren't awesome and that's a big...
I ditched mine, I needed the reach a bit shorter and the bar a bit higher. For now I’m using cheap 35mm stem an 40mm rise, will get something nice later when I’m sure on the rise I want.
Rides a lot better with that setup for me, much more manoeuvrable and comfortable getting into the air. I...

I’d probably look at a Garbaruk cassette or similar rather than spending on a hub/driver for a lower quality wheel. I think I’ve done it before to get 12 speed on HG.
I’ll probably go back to XT 11 speed though when mine wears, it just shifts perfectly and easier to get and keep tuned...
Just to throw in my 2c on the Minion/Assegai topic.
Having spent around 5 or 6 years with the DHF on the front, some time with the DHR2 (I just preferred the DHF on front myself), and the last year or two on the Assegai, I would say the Assegai does not give a whole lot away to the DHF at full...
Well sure, if what you're saying is demo the bike if you can, then of course, makes sense. I'm in full agreement.
I didn't test ride the bike (on dirt) and I bought it. I made the decision on the large number of reviews both in youtube format and written. I gauged what people said about how the...
I think it's a mistake to immediately bin the Charger 3. It's not garbage it's just different, and it can be made 160mm with minimal expense, if that's the requirement. There are plenty of stellar reviews, and the complaints probably mostly come from impatient people who expect it to setup like...
FWIW I deleted stuff that was going way off topic in my defending our crappy trails here versus JP's amazing trails. That was going off topic and I've fixed it. Apologies for the huge inconvenience of reading a handful of unrelated posts. Must have been quite a burden.
As for who cares about...
Interesting, that changes things. I've never come across a non-DD MaxxGrip here, I'll see if I can find one next time I need one.
Do you have a link to somewhere selling them in NZ?
Yeah I have in the past but the rolling resistance & weight wasn't worth the increase in grip, I guess because mostly where I'm struggling for grip is because it's a few inches of loose and gravel, I don't think it's worth it... It has been a while though... But I'm resistant to growing a pile...
I have the 9.8XT and am sticking with the stock suspension at least until I get bored much later on :)
The new Charger 3 I find harsher compared to the older plush 2.1 Lyrik and I was disappointed at first. It feels more like Fox suspension to me. It has no tokens by default so the air spring...
I would just say don't worry about the EXe being enough, it will be. It will probably NOT be enough if you are riding with other ebikers on full fats especially if they're a lot lighter than you and/or want to ride in Boost. If you're by yourself or with other analog bikers, it won't be lacking...
Bontrager that came on it was horrendous as front tire, acceptable for a rear.
A decent tire is going to help you get better at cornering faster over time. For braking it's obviously essential.
WT are fine for 30-35mm (and that is stated by Maxxis). I've used them on 30mm for years now. I love...
Interestingly enough, the wash I gave the bike right before the display stopped working was the first wash I actually used a cloth and soapy water in addition to the (gentle) hosing. Maybe pushing the button allowed water ingress? :)
Water does get in the downtube after washing. If I remove the battery afterwards there's a bit of water around the battery itself, not heaps but some. Shining a torch up the downtube (lol) the bits around the charge port etc look damp. So it does get in there. It gets in around the display I...
It is with great happiness that I eat my words. After talking to the "service advisor" guy who is apparently not a mechanic, I took the bike in, with not high hopes. He tried to run diags, came out and said the display is dead, dragged one of the new ones off the floor. Came back out with mine...
