I understand your words here but surely the responsibility to remove the restriction is down to the user not the manufacturer, as long as the manufacturer complies with the law at the point of sale your responsibility is ended.
The Specialized bike I bought was/is still sold as a dual wheel size bike, 27.5” and 29”, now you are telling me that I have to drive more than 300 km when I want to change wheel size? - That is the trip to my specialized dealer.
We're riders too, and we agree with you that this is frustrating. Having a good feature disappear is a shame, and absolutely no-one here wanted to remove it or to be seen as the fun-police.
However we're taking care to be as responsible as possible as we work towards a sustainable future for eBikes. In particular regulators are rightly changing their stance to eBike "tuning" - recent changes to EU law make those responsible for product design/engineering personally liable for non-compliance here. It was perceived that wheel-circumference adjustment was being used by the majority to circumvent the law and we had to respond .
We understand that this feature is important to you and that not everyone is just around the corner from their LBS. We'll raise this with our product teams - they read your comments too.
