I've seen videos of people lubing their chains by turning the pedals backwards. I've also seen one where the rider puts a piece of wood in to enable this to happen. I don't seem to be able to do either with the Bosch motor on my Trek Powerfly FS4. Does anyone have a solution?

Stick an Allen key in one of your chain ring bolts. When you turn your crank arms backwards one of them will push against the Allan key and turn the chainring and chain for lubing.

I've already explained why I don't like doing that unless there is no other option.

Noob question but why isn’t it ok to turn the pedals forward when lubing the chain?
I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with it but you are fighting against the gears and if you do not have a stand it's difficult to hold the rear of the bike up turn the pedals and apply the lube all at the same time.
