Doesn't matter what they call it as long as you know that they are talking about. Mtb/emtb is fine to type (because lets face it its going to take me at least 3 goes to write acoustic before auto-correct can guess what I'm on about and its just a matter of time before it auto-corrects to "autistic bike") but saying mtb/emtb out loud makes me sounds like I'm having a stroke.
But I understand the irrational hate for some words. For me "going for a gym sesh" or "Had a few jars in the pub last night" will have me thinking less of you.
I wonder if they had these problems with iceskates after rollerskates and rollerblades came out?
