Levo Gen 2 TCD Display erratic, occasionally logs 10X compared to odometer

I purchased 2 Levos with TCD displays back in September 2018. Initially one of the TCD displays would not track distance properly. I would ride 10 miles, the odometer and mission control would say 10 but the display would show I went 100! Odd thing is it would not do it all the time. I contacted rider care and they claimed they have never heard of this before. We reviewed some settings and confirmed I had things set correctly. They then suggested updating firmware.
I was able to get to a shop within a week and had both bikes updated to the latest firmware. The update first appeared to fix the one that gave me problems but now the other one was doing the same thing. I rode for several weeks before attempting to contact rider care again and during this time both displays would intermittently have the same problem. I waited some time to contact rider care again thinking others would see this and they would have a firmware fix. Once again rider care claimed they had never heard of this (even though I reported it to them months earlier), and suggested updating firmware again.

Its now over 2 years later and I still see the problem in both displays. Firmware has been updated a few times since then but issue still occurs. I contacted rider care last week and they still claim they have never heard of this. I made two calls specifically for this problem and also reported it when my motor cable failed and my motor unit failed. Apparently they do not log customer complaints.

Has anyone else had this problem? I find it hard to believe that I have the only two. I have found that the problem occurs much more frequently if there is any debris on the magnet for the speed sensor but it does still occur when the magnet is clean. I have also found that I can get it to function normally again by cycling power on the Levo and resetting the meter.

I now see the same problem described back in 2018.
Was there ever a resolution to this?

Hi @skyhigh levo and sorry to hear you've had intermittent behaviour here. Few comments that I hope will help you out.
  1. We launched the ability to update your TCD (the TCD, not the bike) via the Mission Control app today! Really suggest you try this first to rule out a TCD FW bug being the issue. Latest version of Mission Control for Android is available in the play store already, for iOS it should be by the end of day if not already. See this video for how to update your Turbo Connect Display (TCD) in Mission Control
  2. If the magnet/counting wheel rotations was the core issue then your bike would not work reliably, this is a safety mechanism the motor uses to validate motion and regulate speed limit. It's good practice to keep your magnet clean but unlikely to be the source of the issue - especially if Mission Control is calculating speed and distance correctly.
  3. Bluetooth connectivity could be the underlying issue. If the batteries are both running the latest FW then it would be worth re-pairing the TCDs - however this will almost certainly be required following firmware update anyhow. Look for sources of interference if this is still an issue.
  4. If you've adjusted wheel-circumference or speed-limit in any way (dongles/apps etc) then this will affect the TCD's ability to measure speed and distance correctly. Doesn't sound like the issue, just putting it out there.
If you have updated FW and re-paired and still experience issues, post back here with your bike battery and motor FW versions, screen shots from the Mission Control Diagnose screen would be great.

Thank you for responding. I downloaded the latest app today (android version 2.4.1) and here is what I see so far.

1. The device updates page shows my display has the latest firmware.26.B.0. I don't see an option to update but it could be because it does not need it. This firmware has been in the display for some time. The motor now shows it is 7.3.6 and update 7.4.1 is latest. The battery is current with 0.3.1. The motor firmware was updated several weeks ago and at that time the display did not need updates.
2. Not only Mission control gets it right but the odometer is also correct, its only the trip distance that freaks out. I have also been on rides where it is OK for 5-10 miles and then it starts adding distance for no apparent reason.
3. I have tried several things that include complete reset, repairing, new batteries, etc.
4. I can assure you it has not been hacked in any way. I have had a lot of trouble with one of my two bikes and I would not do anything to void my warranty.

So my question now is what do you want to see on the diagnose screen? I am not good at getting screen shots from my phone to my computer so here is what I see. Firmware versions are listed above. Wheel Circumference is 88.78in. Battery health 100%. Odometer is 1068.78. This is the second motor, the first motor failed at 1100 miles. I would rather not post my specific serial number online.

If there is something else you need just let me know.

This morning I looked at the forum and saw all the problems people were having with the latest mission control. I uninstalled it and reloaded it as suggested and I now see the update button is available. Last night when I updated the app I got version 2.4.1, this morning it installed 2.4.3 It still shows the same firmware revisions I noted earlier so nothing new with the display.
Can you tell me what is the latest version for the display? I have called customer care many times and asked what the latest revisions are and so far I no one was ever able to tell me, they always tell me to take it to a dealer for a firmware update. I have already been to a dealer twice in the past and found out that I already had the latest firmware.
I hope to see a response soon.

Hi @skyhigh levo,

In order to update your TCD you can use MC 2.4.1 or 2.4.3 you can navigate to Diagnose > Turbo Connect Display Update (at the bottom of the diagnose screen) > "connect the device" and follow the video shown below to show how to put the device in "update".

See this video for how to update your Turbo Connect Display (TCD) in Mission Control

The latest FW version is 12.5 for TCD.

It is not the same update process as the TCU and Motor on the bike.

Update button did not show up in 2.4.1, it does in 2.4.3. Did you read the firmware versions I listed above? my display is 26.B.0.
Version 2.4.3 still shows 26.B.0 is current and installed. Where is 12.5 and how do I get it.

You need to look a little lower on the diagnose page. Lower than the option to "UPDATE BIKE" that you've recently selected.

Navigate to Diagnose > Turbo Connect Display Update (at the bottom of the diagnose screen) > "connect the device" and follow the video shown below to show how to put the device in "update". You may need to scroll down as this option may be just off the default visible page view depending on your device. When the bike is paired you have a lot more visible options on this DIAGNOSE page, hence it's actually easier to turn the bike off (you can still update the TCD this when the bike is off - your phone connects directly to the TCD via Bluetooth).

HELPFUL NOTE FOR ANYONE HAVING PROBLEMS UPDATING THEIR TCD!>>>> Turn the bike off, take the TCD in your hand and open Mission Control, Go to "DIAGNOSE > Turbo Connect Display Update".

my display is 26.B.0.
Specializedˋs terms for „Display“ might be misleading.

TCD is the display on your handlebar (Turbo Connect Display)

TCU is the On/Off thing with the battery state lights (Turbo Connect Unit). This is called „Display“, too in Mission Control and your firmware here is 26.B.0

I watched the video and I was able to get the firmware updated. The term "display" is very misleading, if it also appears this way in the PC software the dealers use then they may be making the same mistake. 3+ different dealers did updates to both of these bikes and they all said the display was updated, most recent was a few weeks ago. I am now wondering if they ever got updated? Do you know the release date of the current version?

Hi @skyhigh levo ,

The TCD display updates have only been released since Tuesday 15th December 2020 to Retailers and Riders, only through Mission Control.

The latest Firmware is 12.5 released on 15th December 2020.

Retailers were not able to update TCD firmware before the release on the 15th so the firmware on your device is probably from production of the device.

After reading this I took the TCD off the bike and turned it on. then opened up the mission control app and as if by magic the "Turbo connect display update" was available on the diagnose page.
followed the instructions as per video. Update done :)
no need to turn on the bike

Hopefully this information get passed on to the guys that answer the phone at rider care and all the specialized dealers.
This problem was know for a long time but its existence was still denied by rider care just before starting this post. I wasted a lot of time and money going to dealers to get updates that never existed.
I have now had two of the common failures that many Levo owners have had, bad motor power cable and failed motor/belt issue. Every time I have called rider care their first response was to claim it was unknown and I need to take it to a dealer. After pressing them a little a referring to this forum they finally admit the problem is known. I have been fighting a new problem ever since my motor was changed and again they claim its unknown. I eventually found the problem, reported something else I found during this process, offered to send in pictures to show them what I found. They showed no interest in even looking at the pictures.
I will be starting another post soon about this problem. It will be titled "Creaking sound when pedaling after motor replacement"

My TCD does exactly the same thing, and has done since I brought it 2 years ago - I can't be bothered to use it anymore.

Hello all, I am experiencing a similar issue with my Levo and new TCD. I received a TCD as a Christmas gift and it has not worked properly since installed. The initial ride it reported incorrect distance. I updated the TCD and reset it several times and am still experiencing the same issue. Unfortunately, both the speedometer function and the odometer readings are way off. Today I tested the TCD function against the Mission Control App while riding and I note that now the Mission Control app is also reporting the same erroneous information (I had thought the issue was specific to the TCD). Up to today, the Mission Control app seemed to have been correctly recording overall miles traveled, even the though the speedometer function wasn't functioning correctly.

I went for a ~9 mile bike ride today (my riding partner recorded the distance of the ride) and both the TCD and the Mission Control app report the ride as 34 miles, yet the major difference in miles traveled only occurred near the end of the ride. The bike's motor and battery were recently replaced (motor has around 30 miles, battery has 6 charge cycles) and now due to the "glitch" the odometer for the new motor reads 75 miles. I also note that while riding the speedometer readout of the TCD and Mission Control stats gets stuck and often won't go past 14.7 mph, and once I am completely stopped the speedometer displays a random mph for sometime (doesn't report zero). The only thing on the TCD display that is seemingly correct at this point is the clock and the mode (eco, trail, turbo).

I have the latest version of the Mission Control App and MC reports System Status with a circled green check mark. Rear brake rotor magnet is clean.

My battery firmware is A020.0
My motor firmware is 7.1.1
TCD is 12.5

@Specialized Rider Care Is there something more I can do to correct this issue? When the new motor was installed on 12/12/2020 I believe my LBS did an update, as my bike's odometer was reset to zero to reflect the new motor.

Try repeating the process - I had a similar experience when trying to update my TCD. My TCD even got stuck "connecting" after the update occurred. I eventually reset the TCD (knowing I had the latest firmware) and re-paired it to the bike. Hope this helps.

Hi again all, I spoke with Specialized Rider Care by telephone today (I'm in California) and was informed the problem is a "known issue" with first generation Levos. The customer service rep stated he would send me some tips from a "turbo specialist" that have been known to help. Seemingly, the problem is a firmware matching issue, as it pertains to the components working together correctly. Once I receive the information from Rider Care I will post it here and hopefully we can collectively get this issue solved.

@skyhigh levo - I am not sure if your bike has the plastic covers that go over the motor/cable area, however I had some creaking as well and found that sanding down the plastic covers a bit helped with them creaking against the frame of the bike frame. I also saw one youtuber who put grease between the covers and the bike frame area (although I think that would attract a lot of dirt). I can also say that my Command Post creaks. Just some thoughts in regards to the creaking sound you're experiencing.

Hi all, I spoke with Rider Care again today and it was suggested I have my battery updated - which I did and I am still experiencing the problem with the speedometer and odometer readings being grossly off. Another call to Rider Care and it was suggested I ensure that the Levo Software correctly has my wheel size at 2255mm, which I verified with my LBS that it does. Rider Care stated they are going to send me a replacement TCD. I explained that it seemed to me that the TCD was simply a screen for the information coming from the motor and battery, and that Mission Control was also reporting erroneous information. The rep stated it was basically worth a try. The Rider Care Rep stated he was waiting for more information from a Turbo Specialist and would connect with me once he had more information to share.

Anyone else have any luck or insight into solving this issue?

I am left wondering what has changed that has caused this issue...? I installed a new motor 12/2020 and It seemed that my overall mileage was seemingly being correctly tracked before and after the new motor. It is appearing it was the addition of the TCD when things went goofy, although I had never bothered to use the speedometer function up to the point of using the TCD.

Update: I tried the TCD with a different bike battery and had the same experience of the speedometer function not working properly. I also took the TCD off and used just my phone and Mission Control (wondering if maybe there was some sort of interference) and had the same results :(

Seems I may be the only guy left trying to solve this issue... On the phone again now with Rider Care trying to get more answers...

@Specialized Rider Care - do you have any new information you can provide toward this issue? It seems more and more that a firmware update has caused the problem...

Hi, I updated my TCD close to the release of the update and that seemingly is what started doubling the miles not only to my rides, but to my new motor (new 12/12/2020). I am glad to hear that updating your TCDs took care of your issue, I wish I had the same experience.

I've been to my LBS several times over the past few day for battery updates and verification of my wheel circumference. I've also spent quite a bit of time on the phone with Rider Care trying to sort out the issue. Rider Care is sending me a new TCD (although Mission Control is also reporting the erroneous info, so I don't see how a new TCD will help). Rider Care stated if the replacement TCD doesn't correct the issue, I'll need to take my Levo to my LBS for them to sort it out and potentially warranty the new motor...

Hi all, I am still trying to solve this issue so this is my update:

I removed the Peartune device that was not suppossed to have any effect on the speedometer/odometer only to find that both the speedometer/odometer were still incorrect. Since removing the device I am at least not seeing the TCD stop at 14.7 MPH as it had been doing with the device installed.

I took my Levo into my LBS and we changed the wheel size from the stock 2255 to be close to what I measured the wheel rollout to be of 2181mm (85 7/8') and that made a small difference in the speedometer/odometer being less fast. We tried going up 2300mm (over what I had measured) and that of course made the speedo issue worse. I ended up leaving the circumference at 2125mm (83.66").

Now I am completely confused as to what is happening. With the wheel size being set at 2125mm I am still around .5 MPH fast on the TCD as compared to the two different GPS Speedometer apps I used to compare the speed, and the measurement being used is over 2" smaller than the actual size of the wheel. 2181mm is what I measured rolling my wheel out and 2125mm is what is set in Mission Control.

I had reasoned that the wheel size being too small is what was making the speedometer/odometer show fast (the wheel was turning more revolutions), yet making the wheel size even smaller made the speedometer/odometer closer to correct. Seems we should've set the wheel size even smaller to try and close the gap further, yet I was concerned about using too much of the bike shop's time and confused as to what was happening.

I think I've been thinking too long on this and was hoping someone could please help me understand this.

Turns out this is something that only the LBS can do, so I'm taking it back there.
