Maybe top tube pointing towards stem like I plan to do on my orange? Should give you room to manoeuvre still I think ?

Unfortunately not. The top post tapers in all directions and the fastenings are not long enough to go round the top tube near the stem. I suppose I could just rely on the strap round the stem and one top tube strap but that leaves the other one flapping around. It seems a shame to ruin an otherwise good bag by cutting the offending strap off and in any case makes the bag less secure which is also the case if I place the bag lower down the top tube by extending the stem strap.

Something wearable then I guess. New top or bib that has the pockets. My specialized bib has 3 pockets on the back, middle one holds a 600ml bottle

Drill holes. No way. Drinking beforehand doesn't work for me. When I get to the top of the hill I'm parched. I think the small collapsible bottle, with a small top, is the best solution so far. It will stash in a pocket for the downhill and I can top it up again when I get to the bottom. My existing collapsible bottle's top is too big for that. I wouldn't want to come off with that in my pocket.

I'm don't think I'm dehydrated although they do say that if you are thirsty you are already dehydrated. It's more the sensation in the mouth that I need to combat. If I drink any more before setting off I will end up spending more time peeing than riding :) That's an age thing. Perhaps boiled sweets will do the job, who knows. I'm just looking for suggestions while I'm out of action.

Perhaps I'm overly obsessing about this. I do have a tendency, bordering on OCD, to do that. :) I've got the bit between my teeth to find a solution whereas in reality perhaps I'm over egging the problem.

Too subtle for me, I have no idea what that means or what your point is. Are you suggesting that I am "imprisoning" myself by discounting a back pack? If so you are right but how does that help? Are you simply point scoring by making "clever" remarks"? I really have no idea.

I believe it's a reference to the movie "Papillon."

Fidlock unbase if you want to attach to bike, with the fidlock magnetic bottle - I attached mine with heavy duty zip ties rather than the rubber straps, it worked really well.

However I have since removed it as didn't really use it, and I now but one of these Osprey soft bottles in the back pocket on my bib shorts that I use under my MTB kit, I dont notice the bottle is there, easy to get to put back, plus you dont get any trail debris on the mouthpiece.

Endura also make a bib short that fits a hyrdration bladder
