Shimano Steps E8000 locking ring tool

Whilst compiling a review for an eMTB fitted with the Shimano E8000 drive unit and an associated article on ebike maintenance, something struck me and that was that I have yet to see anyone making mention of removing the locking ring on the Shimano E8000 drive unit.

Out of curiosity only, I'd be interested to hear whether anyone on here is using a tool such as the Shimano TL-FC39, the quality Cyclus Tools, Steps 8000 compatible tool, something else altogether, or not even considered what to do when the chain ring has to be changed.

Remove pedal and open chainring bolts, that’s all. No special tools needed.

Thanks for the reply, but that wasn't what asked. I asked specifically about removal of the locking ring.

Just borrowed the shimano tool And took the ring off etc to check behind it , all you can remove is the chain ring carrier and a large circllip . Any furthar access even to the seal looks like it would require splitting the motor casings ,
There is really little point removing the lock ring unless a full motor strip was required or the chainring carrier was damaged
The chainring just unbolts from the carrier like any normal chainring so changing that is no different to a normal bike .
The tool is certainly needed to remove the lock ring unless you butcher it with a hammer and punch , it’s a left hand thread and is quite tight .

Just the answer that I wanted to hear. Thanks for that. I have been curious in respect of whether anyone actually bothers to check it when carrying out periodic maintenance. I know that if I owned the system that I would, but I'm pretty anal in respect of maintaining anything mechanical, but I'll add it as just a personal advisory only in the article. I already know that you aren't the sort to cut corners when it comes to caring and maintaining an eMTB.

It's needed for remove or replace the chain guide. I was thinking of replacing the stock chain guide with one with a bash guard, but haven't purchased the tool.

The lockring came loose on my bike during a ride after owning it around two weeks (200miles use ish). Quite possibly not tightened adequately during assembly.. I tightened it carefully with pipe grips (I was serious with my previous reply) and it hasn't come loose again.
I tend to check my bikes thouroughly after/before/during every ride and keep on top of maintenance on all my bikes.
While we're discussing the tool, Has anyone found a reasonably priced alternative to the super pricy Shimano tool?

dont think you can get a chain guide with bash guard for the shimano motor. i tried a while ago and its because the bolt pattern is unique. if you can find one though, let me know? cheers.

I've ordered the tool.. Mine came.loose on me after a few rides.. I've butchered it up tight again with a hammer and punch ... Seems to be right for now

i need to remove this lockring today and i dont have the tool. any recommendations on getting it off ?

You can can just remove the sprocket from the spider to access the bolt no need to remove the ring . Also no need to remove the motor or rear bolt , leave the 2 rear bolts in place and the motor just hinges out the way , you’ll need it like anyway to carefully lower it into place while making sure the cables are all sitting in the right place and not trapped . You can even leave the crank in place if you don’t have that tool

There is no way to remove the ring short of hammer and punch if it’s properly tight . But as I say no need to remove it .

I've taken off chainring and guide but still have the chain guide mounting plate held on bt the lockring hiding the top rear engine bolt. Stuck until lockring tool arrives I believe as I can't get an allen key on the last bolt. I'm trying to drop my motor to replace a suspect hydraulic hose.

I found a more versatile and cheaper alternative to the original shimano tool. With the shimano TL-FC39 you also need another shimano tool to drive it :ROFLMAO: the TL FC36 :rolleyes:. Park tools have the LRT-2. Here in Australia it is nearly half the price. It has the added bonus of being driven by a big adjustable spanner, or a socket and torque wrench - tools that many of us will already have.

J'ai trouvé une alternative plus polyvalente et moins chère à l'outil shimano d'origine. Avec le shimano TL-FC39, vous avez également besoin d'un autre outil shimano pour le piloter, :ROFLMAO:le TL FC36 :rouler des yeux:. Les outils de parc ont le LRT-2 . Ici en Australie, c'est presque la moitié du prix. Il a l'avantage supplémentaire d'être entraîné par une grosse clé à molette, ou une clé à douille et une clé dynamométrique - des outils que beaucoup d'entre nous possèdent déjà.

I was searching for one and eventually i found an lbs with one in another town, to tighten it for me, i guess thats really local though. Quotes from the real lbs were pricey at $80. Ebsy eould be the way to go. Shortly after i ordered some new shorter slx cranks for my enduro bike. The new shimano mtb cranks have a spline mount chaineing and they came with a chainring spline mounting tool that is the same as whats needed for the esteps chainring carrier. The tool alone was 80cad and the cranks with chainring and the tool were 175cad. Wierd price breakdown. Thst tool shoild be no more than 20cad i would think
