Shimano E8000 update problem

Hey Guys,

I started updating the E8000 motor that the e-tube app said had an outdate firmware version (4.4.6) to the latest (4.6.0).
It all went well up onto the 90% mark when it just seemed to stop... bike still in the Shimano steps logo on the E8000 display, e-tube app still saying that is updating but it took almost four hours now to reach to 92%... anyone had something similar happen to you? I am afraid to stop the process but I have no idea if it is in fact doing anything. It is very unlikely that an firmware update like this should take this long...

Thanks

at 4 hours there's definitely something wrong happening. Mine took just a few minutes to update to 4.6.0
is your phone's data/wifi good?
I tend to update mine over Wifi and stick the phone and the bike within a metre of the router.

I think so too, not normal at all. The wifi on the phone is good, I tested when it seemed to stop but the access to web is perfectly fine. However it just went to 93%.

Looks like you're just going to have to be patient... annoying but just make sure your phone battery's ok and the bike don't switch itself off

Next time you should disable wifi while updating. Some phones use same chip for all radios and if there is a lots of wifi-traffic and/or poor reception, it might affect also BT.

There has been several reported cases in Finland where update over the air has bricked the bike. Sometimes it just needs a retailer to reinstall the fw but at least in one case the hw was replaced.

Good idea is to invest to SM PCE1 (or SM PCE-02, which is newer) and update over the wire.

This is a known Bluetooth issue, others on this forum have encountered it - you may have to take it back to the dealer unfortunately...

Bike bricked during firmware update? - EMTB Forums
I saw that thread but it refers to errors given in the app when the firmware was updating. Mine has no error, still doing it, it is just taking hours to do it... 5 hours later it’s at 94%...

OK. I had exactly the same issue day before yesterday. Froze at 93%. After HOURS of nothing I thought I had a bricked bike. This was my ebiG nine, which is 5 days old. I had just upgraded my eone sixty with no issues.

In the end I turned off the app (and shut it down properly). I was using iOS. I removed the battery from the bike and waited a minute. (Don't think this was necessary so try without this step first). Re-connected battery. My battery turned on but I had no display and no shifters. Panic ensued...

Then after I started it (bike and app) again I was able to reconnect to bluetooth, even though I had no display and no controls. It appears that the motor enters recovery mode and runs the bluetooth connection. After connecting via the app there was a screen saying that the connection was interrupted and a restore was needed. I clicked the restore button and 5 minutes later all was good. If you can't reconnect the BT connection forget it on your phone and re-pair.

My bike is fine and with the latest firmware.

Hopefully you can be as lucky as I was.

Gordon

p.s. I did a search and there is a page on the Shimano site that runs through the screens you will see in the restore process.

they told me the updat freezes and that i would have to take the bike back to them to reset the original download
Odd that mine updated quickly to 4.6.0 with no issues.
I wish Shimano would release proper notes with each update letting us know what the update is for so we could make the choice whether or not to.

Anyone know what the update does? I've done it and the only thing I've noticed is you can use all 3 modes when the battery is down to the last bar where (I think) it used to go into eco mode and stay there

I updated to 4.6.0 a few days ago without issue, android 9. This update too a bit longer than usual, but still it was only minutes.

Months ago, a firmware update failed and it bricked the bike. I was able to restart the update and it completed the process, all good.

It seemed to smooth out trail and boost modes, maybe a placebo.

Mine seems to have recovered also. After don’t know how many (more than 10) hours the app showed an error updating and proposed to re-write the firmware. I accepted and after a few minutes it seems to be ok. Will try tomorrow on the trails... thanks all you guys for the help.

To my understanding 4.6.0 just added Korean language, otherwise it is the same as 4.5.1 which made the drive connect smoother. I.e. there is no real need to update to 4.6.0.

On the other hand if Shimano follows standard versioning schemes, 4.6.0 should add more than just a language module for 4.5.1...

Is it possible to have an optional update that removes all the extra languages that I don't need. They must be cluttering up the software!

Mind you, if my laptop is anything to go by, 98% of the stuff on it is of zero interest to me and it still works fine. :)

The 4.6.0 update was quite slow maybe 10 mins but I put that down to my crap superfast Bt broadband at 5mbps
The update before stopped at 98% and we though it was going to be a problem , switched it all off re booted and it was there all done
We all feel it’s smoother but my update coincided with my new motor so I’ve no idea if it’s the new motor or the update , like to think it’s the update

You can easily do that with your phone on the app , set trail and boost wherever you want them .
You can’t change eco though .
