Problems in lowest gear and highest mode

I decided to bomb it up a climb in granny gear. Changed fine to the gear, but my drivetrain started making a massive noise from the back, sounding like the chain was winding wrongly. I decided just to cycle up the climb anyway, and it worked fine, even though it was making a racket. Changed gear, went back to standard mode, and the bike carried on as if nothing had happened. Cassette looks fine, got no idea what happened. Anyone else experienced this with a Yamaha PW 2x10 Shimano XT?

Ok so been a while since I posted this topic, but I’ve kinda isolated the problem.

I checked on my bike stand to see if there was any problems in High mode in the lowest gear, and not a whisper of a problem.

So it only happens going uphill in lowest gear, in High mode.

Maybe the chainring spider needs changing to an offset one?

What's actually happening when you're in the lowest gear (largest cog)?
Is the chain skipping, rubbing against the next cog or is the chain catching when it leaves the derailleur?
Either of those may just need the low stop screw or the B screw to be adjusted.

Rocky's correct, if you weren't on the smaller front chainring you should be when on the lower half of the rear cassette, likewise use the larger front chainring for the smaller half of the cassette. Google Sheldon Brown for (lots) more info.

You will get this if you don't change to the small chainring.
The chain is on too much of an angle.

Well that sucks... surely every gear should work fine. Maybe I need to replace the drivetrain to a 1x.

All the problems happen going uphill:

I’ve already checked every gear with the motor on high while hanging from my bike stand.

Chains are not like rubber bands, they are designed to run in a straight line.
Or as straight as possible.
You will get more life from your chain using both front rings appropriately than you will from a single ring.
Plus you will have 20 speed.

I thought the more gears better bike was a myth?

Have you consider a coaching experience.

My club offers events throughout the year (doable if you are in south wales?)
