I was gonna ask why also?

For clarification, I meant this calendar year. Realistically, as I've very limited time as it is, on the run up to Xmas (particularly with a young family) I'm unlikely to get out for the next couple of weekends. Old friends to meet up with, Christmas markets to visit etc.

January tends tends to be hard weather wise, and after a week of riding through snow to work and back in all honesty I'm not that motivated to go out again at the weekend, even if time allows.

This year I started again in February, which isn't too bad. Depends on how messed up the weather is

Well we set off towards the west in the rain and 1/2 hour later all the rain had passed us. Just got a bit wet on the last couple of miles home.
Although I personally was extremely wet all day after falling into a swollen beck whilst trying to stay dry crossing it

Only downside i've found is that i can't carry enough water on the bike, the Decoy 475ml bottle doesn't go far for me.

Does the water  have to be carried on the bike or would something like this help ?

Now then ..I was always told that a certain Gary Fisher was the Grand-daddy of Mountain Biking..
I started my mtb life on a Gary Fisher Wahoo..fully rigid ..

I guess it really comes down to how you define mountain biking. When I read about the Repack Races, it sounded more like gravel bikes. Then again, I was riding BMX bikes thru trails (of course we built jumps!) in the bushes around our houses in the 'burbs back in early 70s as well. Maybe I invented mountain biking (but on BMX bikes)?
Any way, for those who are interested, Cove Bikes was ONE of the pioneers of mountain biking on the North Shore along with a bunch of other crazy teens with nothing better to do in the '70s.

I can lay claim to riding down steep stuff long before BMX was a thing ..on a tourer with Sturmey Archer 3spd grip shift gearing on massive pit heaps ( coal waste) in the North West Durham coalfields when I was just a nipper ..
I rode the same bike on a School ( not mine) trip in 1969 which my uncle led ..(he was the history teacher at said school)..I'd be 12 years old and the youngest on the tour..I remember coming down Snaefell mountain ( Isle of Man) .. on tarmac (asphalt) with the speedo bouncing off the scales max'd 40mph ..mind you there was another lad riding a Raleigh Chopper and had an arse that finished at the back of his neck after the 10 day trip( that long thin saddle just about split him in half )
..so maybe I was an Mtb pioneer along with God knows how many others

I remember staying at Ratagan youth hostel in 80s I'm thinking. I must have had a bike as I was asked if I was doing the RSF ride. It left from Invergarry probably 30 miles on road to Kinlochhourn then off road to Arnisdale , back on road to Glenelg and up over the Ratagan pass to the hostel. 56 miles seems to ring a bell. He said you want to see the state of some of them at the end. I did half of it many moons ago quite enjoyable I thought.

Got out today dressed like a paraffin lamp I admit. Not many out a few crazy golfers. Cold and windy. Keep something for seven years they say , found a pair of old work boots in the shed worn for 3 weeks a long time ago. As waterproof as anything I have owned , not the trendiest I must admit.

Wow, that brings back memories!! I lived in Bradford and I was somewhere between 8 and 10 (1959-1961). I had a steel bike with Sturmey Archer 3-speed gears. It had brakes operated by steel linkages; I think they might have been called rod-brakes, but I'm not sure. The bike even had steel mudguards front and rear. My Dad had rubbed them down and painted them with white gloss paint; I thought it looked the absolute business!

I can remember riding down "The Black Hills" with my mate. They were probably old coal-mine slag heaps. Falling off was not an option. Ruts were a problem!
