4 seasons in one today - but it was an epic ride. A lot of rocky downhills and the gps took me through some trails that has clearly not been ridden for ages.

This guy was wandering around this area for a few weeks. Finally got a video of him. When he stood up for a back scratch he was over 6’ tall (maybe 6 1/2’). A younger teenage bear had been following him around, probably for protection.

A week later, in the same area, riding down a trail, the teenage bear was suddenly on the trail in front of me (15-20’ away). I quickly yelled at him …”Hey”…”Hey”. But he couldn’t see me right in front of him. I yelled again “Hey”…”Hey”.

Now I saw why he was confused. There was dried blood around his head, one ear was gone and his eye was on his cheek. The big guy must of gave him a sh*t kicking.

He spun around and ran away from me. I don’t think he made it for very long.

Scary! Your heart must have skipped a beat, they are so impressive… and big…

I see you’re on the Wet coast, have a listen of this podcast. It is the story of some guy from Quadra island who met a grizzly while riding. Listen preferably on a moonless night while camping.

I will.
We’re only guests in their home. We see them on a regular basis on the trails. (My backyard and on garbage day). You definitely move for the big-guys. They’ll just keep walking towards you …so you better move.👍🏻

There’s a few really big guys (Grandpa bears) on this mountain. They couldn’t care less about you. The teenagers are sketchy and scared at the same time. Mama with cubs…leave the area. Had a couple of fake charges from Mama with cubs.

Just listened to the podcast. Wow!🤯

Only been to Quadra island a few times but drove past thousands of times. I’ve got a few stories of close encounters with wildlife …but nothing like that.

I’m thinking of carrying a knife with me now.

A guy in Gold River (or Zebalis) was taken off his horse by a cougar. He had to fight for his life. He killed the cougar with his knife.

You can tell from his voice that it still scares him just retelling his story.

A big knife!

Cougars are also a concern around here. I encountered one only once winter riding, he crossed in front of me, made me pause for a second.

My little knife probably won’t do.

Cougar alert in our neighborhood a few years ago. Took a few small dogs. Kids had to be escorted to school.

Cougar ran between my legs once. Kinda funny now. New area for Falling, my partner wandered off to his section/face. I was checking out the lean on my first tree to be felled (8’ cedar) when a cougar scrambled out of the root system and between my legs. All I saw was fur…and then its tail as it ran away.

Mushroom picking with a friend one day. We separated on either side of a large mound for a few minutes …then I saw something flicking in the knee-high shalalh. (Spelling?) with my eyes I followed an outline to a set of eyes. The cougar was stocking me. Maybe 20’ away by this time. I raised the mushroom bags above my head and yelled to my friend not to let her dog come towards me.

The cougar sliddered away in seconds.

Different world at your end, as I know. Here you can stop anywhere to p.. and do not have to be concerned of bears, puma, snake or alligators in the bushes. Well, sometimes we have stupid people taking out and loosing their cayman or a snapper turtle in a public swimming lake.

On the other site you still have a chance when biting back:

Monday actually.

Went for a ride up my nearest hill Benarty which is basically across the road from me. First time since December.
Bike is 2021 Levo SL Expert Carbon. Hills to left of Trig point are 1st Bishop Hill, then West Lomond.
bhuhnuh

Looking north over Loch Leven with West Lomond and Bishop Hill beyond, Been up on top of them a fair few times, nice ride along top or a great run down front of hill on trail from left of where trees are on top of Bishop.

The wooded island to left centre of pic is where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned for a time in Loch Leven Castle.
My local town Kinross is to left of loch.

Looking west towards where I live, near centre of pic. Stirling is just beyond the western end of the Ochill hills that run from right of pic.

Looking back south towards Edinburgh, my bike leaning against trig. Can just make out the tops of the Queensferry Crossing, the new road bridge built to replace the Forth Road Bridge built in the 1960's. They haven't needed to replace the Forth Bridge though and that's way older than me...

After @The EMF got in touch on Monday evening to say that he had fixed his bike a ride for today was quickly agreed upon ..starting from Barrowburn in The Cheviot Hills .
As scenic as it is on a sunny day ..today was not going to be a day for taking in the views as visibility was restricted ..but a cracking ride was had anyway with the only downside being the amount of sheep shit clinging to both man & bike at the end..could the shitty wooly freaks not have the decency to stay clear of the actual bridleways ..😬
Pics of Wayne back in the groove and a few of the wild Cheviot Goats..
The only way to start the day ..bought at the Border Reiver in Otterburn ..

Many thanks to Wayne not only for his company & craic ..but for the use of his mobi portable washer ( mine was sitting nice and snug at home ) ..saving the interior of my car from the smell and a fair dollop of sloppy sheep shite

To follow on from @The Hodge, a very impromptu ride in the best of Cheviot mid summer weather. Quite an awkward ride at time on the granite pavement that runs parallel with the border fence. We both had otb off’s due to less than perfect line choise. A great ride tho. Won’t post many pics as they replicate Neil’s. IMG_8148.jpeg
I see a little silhouette of a man @
The Hodge, @The Hodge coming out of the mist…..😂 IMG_8151.jpeg

I live about 15 miles north of Newcastle and I did a there and back from mine crossing the Wansbeck River via the dam south to an old mining village of Cambois (pronounced “Kamis”). Nice gentle paths leading to some good dune singletrack to North Blyth. Only out for an hour or but was a nice easy ride. View attachment 143412 View attachment 143413

Finally looking north to Newbiggin by the sea…….this is an often overlooked part of the Northumberland coast quiet and beautiful.
This is the same county where @The Hodge rode yesterday. I would have been out if the Whyte hadn’t been off the road 😎
Northumberland is a great place to ride a bike……
It most certainly is so much stunning scenery only a mile or 5 from me
with that being said I’m putting my scuba gear on and heading to hamsterly tomorrow

😝
