Part fell off, where does it belong?

When I was installing the rear wheel, the rear derailleur slipped out of my hand and banged back. A small part fell off the rear section and for the life of me I don't know what it is and where it belongs.

Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Bike is a Trek Rail 9.8 XT

Same thing happened to me, same part. I had no idea where it had come from. I’ve kept it so will be chuffed if somebody knows.
