Orbea - Ability to support spares

Seriously worried about Orbeas ability to support parts for older generation bikes. A friend has had his battery fail on his Gen 1 carbon. It went into the bike shop 4 weeks ago and he has been quoted the earliest delivery possible is November !!! 4 months to wait for a part is dreadful. I have the Gen 2 model and wonder how long parts will be supported for that. Lesson learnt here not to buy a bike with bespoke parts, had this been a regular Shimano battery then I reckon the wait would not be so long.

They redesigned the linkage on the Rise going from the creaky 3 piece to the newer 2 piece. That's a good thing.
The 2 piece linkage is backwards compatible, this is also good.

They made the 3 pice piece linkage obsolete so you can't buy spares any more and have to get the whole new assembly £££. That's bad.

2 year old bike and you already can't buy parts for it. It's not a great image.

The new models use new batteries so will I be able to buy a replacement in a few years? I doubt it.

I'm sure I read that Bosch are now guaranteeing support for something like 8 years so you know you'll be able to get parts in the future. This is what we need.

I hear a lot of stories about how folks go to their bike stores and have to wait months for parts. I've had dealings with some of these manufacturers, and have had great service. That leaves me scratching my head. Is it possible that some bike stores are not well connected, and are scapegoating the manufacturer?

Most of the similar stories I've read seem to be Orbea being slow. New motors etc are down to Madison (in the UK) to sort out as the distributor for Shimano. Obrea specific parts have to come from Orbea and I've heard from a couple of different shops that they're not exactly the quickest.

If the part you need is available through a distributor, a new shock for example and the dhop has a good relationship with the distributor, you'll get sorted quickly. If you're waiting for Orbea, it'll probably take a while!

Someone, somewhere will probably pay that for the old linkage as I think you need bits of it if you want the Cascade linkage.

I was fortunate enough that the shop I bought it from managed to sort out a new linkage under warranty.

But my point still remains...

I'm not questioning whether the new style is better. A bike costing somewhere between £5-10k shouldn't have support withdrawn after 2 years. By making the original pieces obsolete, Orbea have effective made the bike unrepairable unless you pay out a substantial amount of money for something that not everyone wants or needs. If it was a 10 year old bike, fine. You can still buy a '22 model brand new yet, you can't buy parts for it any more.

It's poor and it's a concerning attitude to have as a manufacturer to simply stop selling parts for relatively new bikes as and when they feel like it.

Like I said in my first post, in 2 years/5 years will I be able to buy a new battery for my bike? Who knows. Apparently Orbea might just decide one day not to manufacture any more and then I'll have a big ugly paperweight that can't be fixed. Ebikes are expensive and for what they cost, they should work for a lot longer that 2 years.

I'm not always an advocate of rules and standards but I think there should be rules in place to prevent this type of thing from happening. If you're manufacturing and selling ebikes, you should have to provide support for a reasonable amount of time.

The OP was regarding concern over future availability of parts. The fact that they made the linkage obsolete is evidence that this concern is valid.

If Orbea had done a recall on the original linkage and offered a redesigned version free of charge then I'd be less worried. They didn't do that and although some, including me were fortunate e ough to have it replaced under warranty, this isn't always the case. I think anyone who's spent ~£7k on a bike has every right to be miffed at the prospect of having to fork out £350 on parts they don't want simply to keep using the bike.

My friend is also dealing direct with the local Orbea rep. No Gen1 batteries until Nov

Hey guys , just a forewarning of upcoming venting frustrations...
This is a discussion that really needs to go to manufacturers. Orbea CLEARLY , with purpose , designed and built one-off parts for each of their e-bike lineup that could have been cross utilized. I ran into it directly at purchase when they sent me a charger with the wrong plug. They sent me a brother bike charger right next to mine at the dealer. Now the only reason I can think of that a manufacturer would waist time , money and resources to make different parts for different models that CLEARLY could share these parts is pure GREED. Force the buyer to go directly back to them for future parts , except , Orbea seems to have forgotten that for this to work , they actually have to make and have those parts which now will cost more for them , and us , as they did not cross utilize parts. IDIOTIC GREED followed by IDIOTIC LACK OF SUPPORT of that decision of greed.
So , Orbea , I really like my bike , and want to keep riding it for years to come. Anymore I almost laugh when I read of people fearful of voiding their warranty. I mean , sure , I would like to think the warranty means something , but if there are no parts for the repair... well?

Anyway , off my rant... here's a link to the "newer" generation of batteries I found which appear to be usable on the 2022 H models , but sadly NOT on the M models. Again , REALLY?!!


Oh , and before people start bashing Orbea , better try to find parts for your ride and see what kind of luck you really have. I am very happy with my purchase , and would make it again for the deal I got. Just sad that when the time comes I may end up finding a person that knows enough about batteries to replace the cells in my pack instead of buying a OEM replacement.

LOL. Usually when something is changed is because there`s better new version. Or there was somerhing wrong in old one and it had to be changed. It`s called progress. With custom bikes and parts it`s possible that things needs to be modified if it`s realized that some other way would be better. Progress, not creed.

I'm waiting on a reply from Orbea whether my 2022 H15 540 battery is covered by warranty. It went unresponsive a week out of warranty period. It only had 17 charge cycles on it and was reporting 100% SOH the week before it packed up.
These parts should be available off the shelf from major manufacturers, not 3 - 4 month lead times.
I'm wondering if the 630Wh pack will work as a replacement for the 540. Anyone know?

I almost brought an Orbea. My LBS said I’ll sell it to you, but I wouldn't recommend it. It had to due to support issues they were seeing with Orbea. It was a good bike and not cheap. I did do a google search and found little. That was only in July.
Ended up with a Cube and am very happy with it.

Why would I want to spend £350+ on a new linkage when all I need is a £40 axle?
You should be able to get it for free under warranty. I did, tredz sorted it out for me pretty quickly (2 weeks ish). The new linkage still isn't without it's faults. The driveside bolt that holds the linkage together behind the seat tube (god knows why they chose to put it on the inside where it's hard to get to...) keeps coming loose. I've had to try loctite now. Also it's finished in a nasty matt finish that looks uglier than the old one. Has sorted the main problem the old one had mind...

Oh No that’s not good, Batteries dying after only two years is so poor. I still have my original ebike and battery from 2017 ( Bosch) that’s still good for a 2 hour ride. I also have a 2022 H15, and have just dropped out of the Warranty period. Keeping my fingers crossed that mine doesn’t pack up

It's not good at all no... But not sure there's a lot we can do other than not buy Orbeas... however we already did :D

Agree…… such a shame as we love the bikes, Just wouldn’t recommend anyone ever buys a bike with bespoke batteries made for one bike only.

Definitely, My Previous 2 Haibikes ( One is my sons) have Bosch and Yamaha systems, both have standard batteries used across multiple brands, both are still widely available, I am sure I could get my hands on them in a matter of Days. Orbea on the other hand with the rise ( Well the earlier ones) used a bespoke battery that’s used only on the Rise. So unless Orbea have stock then no one else will. Lesson learnt, keep away from Bespoke stuff

My new Rise battery arrived less than 2 weeks after Orbea approved Warranty replacement. This was a 2022 H15 though.
They are looking after bikes under the 2 year warranty. It's ones that are out of it where people have the problems. Out of interest what happened to your battery? Mines on 2500 miles now, bit worried it's on borrowed time! A 2022 H30 BTW 540w battery.

I posted the details above in post 14.
Basically it went unresponsive during a gentle ride a week out of warranty.
17 cycles and still 100% SOH when it happened.

I smashed my left collar bone and right thumb up getting the bike home without power (on tow) so didn't request warranty on battery until it was 2mths out of warranty as I couldn't lift the bike onto bike rack.
Very relieved that Orbea replaced the battery FOC.

Isn't there any consumer law that governs this? Car manufacturers would not keep parts for ten years after the model stopped if they didn't have to do so. The EU must have been good for something. I know we are not in it anymore but Spain still is.

I don't think the industry is regulated yet (or may never be?). Must admit, I never thought of this issue nearly 2 years ago. As much as I love not having to worry about hills anymore. It's disgusted me a little and I'm considering just selling at what's looking like an awful price in a couple months when the warranty is up. Some people have mentioned the sales of goods act, product wasn't fit for purpose. But not sure you're guaranteed success going down that route, if your battery fails post warranty.

If something fails outside warranty, fair do's, you have to pay for a replacement. But there should be a replacement available to buy. Companies constantly changing the design is part of bike evolution in a fast-developing market, but having to keep spares is part of the cost of development and design evolution. Selling new products for many thousands of pounds that have an effective design life of two years before they are fit for scrap is not a good plan for the longevity of the company. By means of media like this website, the word needs to spread that this sort of behaviour is unacceptable.

Didn't CUBE develop a reputation for frame cracking? It was all over the internet. I have no idea whether it was a deserved reputation or just a lot of hype by a few disgruntled owners, but you don't hear of frame cracking on CUBE bikes any more now do you?

thats good, the 2022 bikes batteries seem to be available, just not the previous ones
