What a long way we've come.
Buying my new Vitus VSR got me thinking about my first ever mountain bike that I bought way back in 1991 - a Marin Pine Mountain.
My first upgrade was a pair of those new-fangled fancy suspension fork thingies.
At the time, Rockshox Judys seemed to be the in-thing but, never one to follow the herd, I bought a pair of forks made by Pace Cycles.
Easy to dissassemble with an allen key, all they had inside was a couple of rubber bungs in each leg. Hardly "suspension" at all really, but they did give a whole 25 millimetres of bouncy bouncy travel! Wowee.
Now I've got a pair of "Fox Float 36" 170 millimetre forks that might kill me if I try to open them for a service unless I give them to a modern bike professional with a specific tool kit and a Phd in Advanced Engineering and Quantum Mechanics.
Those were the days, eh?
That's me on the right...
