Mavic, who are in the process of re-launching themselves, have just released details of a new motor system they have in development.

Similar in shape to the TQ HPR50, but weighing in at only 1.2 Kilo's instead of 1.8 Kilo's.

Conforming to the usual 250w but with peaks of 390w. Torque is stated as 37nm with Boosts of 50nm.

The 360wh battery is 1.8kg's and total system weight with sensors, mounts and so on is 3.2kg's - compared to a TQ system weight of 3,9kg's.

There will be a 180wh 1.2kg range extender.

The system is initially intended for Road and Gravel bikes, but you can't help but think with the small form factor and adaptability (it basically mounts into an 88mm oversized BB) it might be a chance for some other MTB brands to enter the EMTB market.

The motor uses a patented cyclodal reducer (5:16 in the video below) , which at first glance looks similar to the Harmonic Drive.

Production bikes aren't expected until 2025 ....

With some of the advances in the reduction systems you can now imagine it's becoming much more feasible to create various different designs/variations of gearbox/motor units which are the same size/weight as the existing motors we have now.

A video .. WARNING - it's on a ROAD BIKE ..

It will be interesting to see what EMTB picks this up. Surprised that they released the information about it so early considering it's a couple of years away.
