At this point I'm just waiting for it to release so retailers knock another 10-15% off the Gen 3s so I can pick up one of those.

Don't forget that only the higher models are being released.

With the original Mahle version (aborted) of the gen4 there wasn't even an alloy version in development, the gen3 was to run in parallel for the lower models.

Presumably the new one will be the same, though a lot more time has since passed so they might not see the gen3 as competitive as it was.

I know you already referenced this before here, but do you have any idea why this happened? Is it just a marketing stratergy to sell the most amount of the higher models first? This can be the case, but not even develop any other models and only relying on the 2 higher models is kinda strange imo. Maybe the alloy versions are a lot easier to manufacture then the carbon ones and for that reason they didnt want to worry about them? Who knows ...

This is just me thinking out loud, I have the idea that the comp alloy is the most sold model(?), to fully develop a bike without even considering it is strange ...

I will mullet my gen 2 first and see how it will be, but everyone said its much better, thats reason why they made gen 3 mullet. If I wont be happy, then I will buy Comp carbon 2025 or Comp Carbon gen 4 next year after S works and Pro release this year. I alredy have 3 sets of carbon wheels and Fox 38 + float X in spare so dont need anything better over Comp carbon.

I believe the Mahle version was aborted because they couldn't get the sound levels low enough at the time. Presumably the M20/M40 is still in development, so it may still drop into other bikes (as was planned) or the Gen5 in 2037 ;-)

They also had another brose/alloy bike in development at the same time with similar specs, it's possible they were going to keep the Levo high end and have the other bike low end. Now, who knows.

They did the higher models first with the gen3. I guess there's a wave of excitement at the start when we're all willing to pay a premium for the newest and best, so recoup as much of your development costs at the start as possible.

I have some production numbers, but I'm not going to look at them or discuss them as it's not fair on Spesh.

Ultimately this release is super weird because there is sooo much G3 inventory - this is just one random dealer in Wisconsin. Basically specialized has to take a massive writedown or stuff their independent dealership network with massive losses (remember Specialized went out and bought a bunch of dealers during peak COVID). My best guess is that they are going to artificially constrain G4 supply (ultra high end models only etc) while simultaneosly heavily discounting G3s. Its a dangerous balancing act, not sure they can pull it off.

I'm not going to link to the shop here but they are a Specialized dealer in Europe. They haven't posted anything relating to the bike and have not mentioned what they are there for specifically, but going by the timing it's almost certainly Levo related.

Not certain where you are seeing all this inventory, show me a pro /s-works bike in s3/s4. There is the lower end alloy and carbon bikes but none in s3/4. Also, these are cheap but I can assure you they aren't losing money.. we just all over paid ;-)

Yeah, especially ebike prices inflated massively with the corona boom. But its still a fine line because they don't want to hurt the brand and their pricing with big discounts. Around here (europe) I can only see S-Works and S4 upwards getting a bit sparse stock wise but other models seem to be available in almost all sizes.

I don't think the late release has anything to do with remaining inventory. Other brands sell new models and old models at the same time on the regular and just discount the older stuff which opens the door for price conscious buyers. It has more to do with parts on the new bikes under embargo and the fact Specialed is about to go bust.

I think it has plenty to do with remaining inventory. Not a Specialized fanboy, but they may actually benefit from selling out the old inventory that by most accounts was still a relevant bike.. it still ranks in the top 5 and it was designed in 2020 and sold in 2021. Pretty impressive and worth more at a discount than closeout. No recent bike releases are killing it as for sales, and the Chinese Super Power Bike may be coming down to earth after all the hype. If you look at the Spec site, they are selling out of sizes, and while this may seem like complete stupidity, I think they could tweak the motor more, react the Gen 5 Bosch (which still does not have a real screen), and ride out the storm. I doubt they are going out of business unless.. Pure speculation. Writing down value on the book has been a strategy for many years.

People absolutely will expect and only pay lower prices now. That's probably the reason why they only release the top spec models first to hopefully grab those big margins from people who want to buy overpriced bikes.

With how things are looking in the US my next bike probably won't be an US brand anyway.

yep, you can get a Gen 3 Works frame for $3,500 and going lower. When they approach $2500, pick one up and build with discounted prices for under 4k? Drop in a Cascade link, then it's a capable and rowdy bike.

The no teaser pics are even more making me feel like it's just going to be just a refresh and nothing super special. 8)

I am pretty happy with my current set up with a 38 and the Genie. I did actually like the flex of the Fox 36 better, so if the Gen 4 is about the same I will keep my Gen 3 and swap the fork back to a 36. Since this picture I have added Maven brakes to it.

This does seem like a powerplay. Ain't nothing wrong with a gen3, and if it saves you like $5k, then it's a no-brainer.

What do you mean by "flex" on the Fox 36 - and which one do you feel is most plush at low speed?

They are similar at low speed. I just notice the stiffer fork chassis in my hands over choppy terrain.

If I was someone that bombed through chunk all the time the 38 shines and is confidence inspiring but the rest of the time the 36 has more overall comfort. That's just my opinion.
