Lack of EP6 tuning parts

Hi there, thanks for the add.
I have a 2024 Merida e160 700se with the EP6 motor with the latest software 4.3.
I am looking for either a chip to derestrict or something like Planet 3 or Speedi unit for the rear hub.
Everywhere I look, the chips are out of stock (almost as if pulled off the shelf under pressure from Shimano?) and the Planet 3 will not fit my centre lock rear hub. (I'm told from Planet 3)
I have been told by many companies that the EP6 and EP801 cant be chipped or tuned!
The bike is only a few months old and it looks like I may be stuck with a lemon.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

The EP6 (and EP801) can definutely be derestricted, as is evident from the number of bikes available in markets where there aren't legal resrictions on assistance speed.
For example, here in NZ, there's a few bikes that have standard speed restrictions at or about 45km/h - Merida e160's included (mine, which runs the EP6, was set to max assistance of 45km/h by a Shimano rep before i bought it).
I've also seen an EP801-equipped Polygon with advertised assistance up to 45km/h, so it's definitely not a hardware or software issue, but an availability/legal issue, I think.

Do not chip or try anything with the speed sensor. You will lock the motor and need Shimano to unlock it, with your motor marked permanently as being tampered with, thus no warranty.

I have the same bike and motor. I have derestricted it using the EMax Software. Contact Peter or Max at EMax tuning. They will get it done for you, for 119 Euros.

My bike has done 400km since the EMax upgrade. It works perfectly, up to 50kph. Including the speed reading perfectly.

Just a note. They are currently working on the software release for the new 4.3 firmware. I have the 4.2 upgrade and I am waiting for them to let me know when they have the 4.3 version ready. So currently I have left my bike with the 4.2 firmware. You may want to wait till they have the 4.3 firmware ready, which Peter has said will be a few weeks.

Thank you HandsomDanNZ for the reply. Here in the UK we have a stupidly low max speed of 16mph/25kmh. As you state, it's just a software issue as the same motor is used world wide with different legal top speeds. It's just that overnight, every tuning kit was "sold out" on every site and still aren't available at time of post some months later? A bit suspect if you ask me

Astro66, thanks for the info. I updated mine to 4.3 as soon as it was released unfortunately (should have waited) Both times ir has updated it has left error code 203 in the app. Is this usual?. Is it possible to go back to a earlier software setting of needed?

Yes. That is a software bug. E203 is an error saying that you have electronic devices pluged in that are not configured. As long as you are not getting that error on the bike screen. It should be fine. But perhaps check with where you bought the bike.

You cannot rollback firmware versions. I was told that by Peter at EMax, who is an expert on the Shimano software.

Contact Max or Peter by email. They can do the 4.3 derestriction, doing a remote session of your computer. But they are super busy, and it might be easier to wait till they have finished the 4.3 update. You will need a PCE02 cable, which is expensive. I borrowed one from my LBS, but many shops won't do this.

Thank you so much. At least there may be some light at the end if the tunnel. I will try them in a few weeks to see if they're ready with the new version.

Unfortunately I'm on 4.3 so waiting for an update for the latest one

You could ask them if they have tested with 4.3.

I been using the PearTune MSO EP6 for a year now, running firmware 4.2.3., no issues.
Hi Mr-Epic-3!
I bought the same "upgrade" for my EP6 RS on a ORBEA Rise H30 2024. I took it to 3 of my local bike shops and none would install it. I would try to install myself but, there are no videos/resources online showing any info how to fit. Can you give any pearls of wisdom for install? Does anyone else have any step by step instructions for install please??

You should have gone a install guide with the PearTune device. But let me find my install guide and I will send over a photo of it.

Hi Mr-E, thanks so much for reply. I got one but it seemed to be for the EP800. Didn't get one that showed how to get into the EP6 RS. Reckon I got to take the motor off... But, there's no online videos to show how to do that. Any help appreciated sir!

It's the same wire diagram, rear wheel sensor plugs into the PearTune and the PearTune plugs into the port that the rear wheel sensor was plugged into:)

Hi Mr-E,
Appreciate your time to respond however, please don't assume my bike mechanical expertise! I am looking for basics, perhaps videos for step by step?
I believe I have to remove my (EP6 RS) motor to install (no videos found). Then I have to connect within the EP6 RS motor. Maybe I sound too stupid but, just want to be able to install without breaking things.
Again, your time and guidance is genuinely appreciated.... The chip doesn't even represent a decent €250 book shelf!! :)

To elaborate, I have my Orbea Rise H30 2023, with a EP6 RS motor. I have bought the PearTune "upgrade" and the instructions don't really say tóo much. So, I am sat, looking at my bike/motor, without any specific tools thinking.... "Ok, how am I gonna fit this then?"

Here a diagram that I created, could help. Other thing you could do is join a eMTB group and I am sure there is someone in the group who would

know how to install the PearTune module:)

Hi Mr-E,
Thanks so much for your quick response and time to upload this pic. No, I didn't get this particular pic in my documentation with the PearTune device. So, whilst I understand how to install it electronically within the unit, my fundamental question is, how do I get into and get access into my SP6 RS motor on my ORBEA Rise H30 (2023)? Sorry if that's an idiot question but, the diagram / drawing looks like it is depicting from drivetrain side of bike. It also "looks like" I don't have to drop the motor out of the frame? It "look like", only the crank has to come off? This is my struggle kind sir? Reason I put "looks like" in quotes is because there's no photos or videos online to help. I wonder whether it would be worth starting a new thread entitled, "Pictures and videos requested for how to get access to an EP6 RS motor"??
Thanks again fella... JB

Yes you have to remove the crank arm, then the chainring to drop the motor. It's not the hardest job but does require a specific tool you'll need to buy as nothing else will fit. You 'could' then fit a different chainring which would allow you to dop the motor without needing to remove it all again. (But i've not investigated that in depth)

It's not the drive-side and you don't have to remove the crank arms, just turn the crank arm facing down. remove the 3 philip screws it's vary easy if you know how to use a philip screwdriver:)

I don't have a Orbea Rise, so not an issue taking the motor cover off on my Husky MC-5. But from what I am seeing on the Orbea website looks like you will have to drop the EP6 motor out of the frame:/
I should have mentioned that above to save any confusion 🤣🤣🤣
