Is my rear cassette suppose to be able to move left and right? Gears were off by 1 until I moved it...

I was having issues with my chain being stuck on large cog 10 and unable to go onto cog 11. In addition, at the smallest cog, it would gear off the cog when I shift to the smallest cog.

I took the chain off and was spinning my cassette with my hand and noticed after a few spins the cassette assembly would move left and right (see pics below). I was able to close the gap on the small cog and the gear shifting was back tonormal

My question is, is it normally for the cassette to move freely left and right when spinning the cassette with no chain attached?

Take the wheel out and check for how much sideways movement there is on the cassette. There should be basically none. Indexing gear shifts rely on the cassette being in a fixed position to ensure accurate shifting. That much movement looks bizarre.

There were these 2 nuts in both sides that needed to be tighten down I think. I've righted them down and it doesnt slide left to right anymore.
It was unscrewed about half an inch !

Sounds like you've found it! Check with the hub manufacturer for the correct torque setting and you should be good to go if the bearings are still in good order.
