Death of a pedestrian killed by a cyclist.
Rider apparently went through a red light and collided with someone crossing the road. Unfortunately the pedestrian passed away from his injuries.
This is a tragic state of affairs for his family, and if the rider is found to have broken the law by jumping thew lights, then whatever sentence the law imposes is justified.
It is pretty much a given that that will be a prison sentence, but this is hardly the case for a hundred other victims when its a road death involving a cyclist and a motor vehicle. This can end up as a fine, a short driving ban and points on their license. There is hardly ever a prison sentence applied.

If we are to have fairness across the board, and not to allow the law to treat cyclists as 2nd class citizens, then all cases must be rigorously pursued by cycling advocacy groups.

There's a town in the Netherlands that has turned off all TLs and accident rates have dropped as everyone approaches with caution! I don't know if it was just a trial but it appeared to have worked...

I'm a car driver and a bike rider ..so I wont pass judgement on what this cyclist has done ..but having read the article you have posted ( bearing in mind that it's the Daily Mail) ..they have already sensationalised what's happened by referring to the rider as " driving recklessly "..
20mph is not particularly fast ..
I've struggled too to find any reference of a prison sentence ..?
Finally paramedics didn't find the unfortunate pedestrian to have life threatening injuries while at the scene ..
While having sympathy for the unfortunate person who has lost his life ..why not let the court decide the outcome before jumping to any conclusion yourself ...

I was living in Melbourne for a while, and I quickly learned it was safer to run lights. Well, that was after I got shunted from behind while waiting on the lights to go green. Lights are like the start of a car race in the city - everyone is frustrated and in a hurry to try and get somewhere. If you run lights you generally have the road to yourself - that's why bicycle couriers run lights too.

Getting run over when you're in the right doesn't really help when you're in hospital ; sometimes you just have to look out for yourself.

Gutter press as judge and jury as usual. The only facts here are that the CPS considered there to be sufficient evidence to charge the cyclist. It is up to the court to decide guilt or innocence.

From what i read he is a tarmac boy not off road warrior so his motor and bike are having an easy time no matter how small his Dongle is .

"De Bruin denies causing bodily harm by wanton or furious driving" - Reprehensible. He stated that his speed was not too high, so this charge is not valid. He ran a red light! This is why he is guilty of causing the person's death; his speed is irrelevant. De Buin was selfishly obeying his wants/desires, rather than the law.

That was in Melbourne - I don't live there anymore. Lots of traffic. You're on your own which means do it when you can. You're always on your own anyway - this way you're taking charge of your own safety by avoidance. It's no different to crossing a road with traffic on foot.
