Where ever
Have tried to undo this Allan bolt that holds front wheel on on my mates bike but can’t shift it. Is it really supposed to be that tight

Hi there,

Max torque of 13.5NM is about what you would excert using a normal allen wrench around 6" long.

So I guess it has been overtightened, and the hex's flats look like they wont last much longer.

Check the other end of the axle to see if it also has a hex keyway in it. If so then use a tool on both ends to turn anticlockwise as you look at your photo.

Otherwise just get a larger lever on the hex and hope for the best :)

Do you have a torx bit that fits in? It’ll bite. I have Allan keys that only grip on the corners to stop this, they work well.

What’s on the other end? Show a photo of that side. I can’t imagine it’s done up silly right but if it is local heat will help, and you could try an easy out.

I'd take a bit of care here. I tightened by hand once, using a Y shaped wrench. Then, used my torque wrench. The extra deflection was only 1/4 turn.

Before you try and undo it any more get some penetrating fluid on it, lay the bike on it's side put the penetrating fluid on then leave it for a while, then use your best fitting tool if it feels like it's not going to shift repeat the process and try again , it may benefit from a bit of heat.
I would resist using longer leavers as it's only alloy and you will strip it out.

Good luck

the threads are on the other fork leg, so if you apply penetrating fluid, that is where it is needed.
