How differcult is this to do ??

is it just a case of getting a sram xd driver and pulling the micro spline off and fitting a xd ???

That depends on the rear hub you have, some have option to just swap the drivers.
What is a reason you want to change from MS to XD? XD is a weaker design - not all cassette cogs are engaged with splines ...

Purely because I want to run a sram asx derailleur and have been told it won’t work with my shimano 12 speed cassette ????

I believe that’s correct not tried it tho ?

I saw many posts on this and other forums that folks are running Sram (mechanical) deraileurs on Shimano cassettes and have no issues, so with AXS it should be no different ...

I guess it is the easiest and cheapest change to try :) Hopefully it all works, and there is a fallback if it doesn't.

Any possible downsides - I assume not quite as good shifting as with a Shimano derailleur? Possibly more wear on chain or cassette as alignment may be very slightly different? (No idea!)

Left B screw as it was, shifting is fine, slightly noisier but am still on sram chain
If you wish to use advantage of HG+ technology you must use a cassette, chain and chainring which are supporting HG+ ...

Shimano chain on a Shimano cassette will change gears more smoothly under load .
They have an edge on the chain that meshes with the cut outs in the cassette . Other chains work . Just not as well .

Just a update
Fitted the gx asx last night

shifter and derailleur sram gx asx
chain and cassette shimano 12 speed

I needed to take 4 links out of the chain , adjust the b gap and that was it perfect shifting I would say no differencein shifting compared to myother bike that’s a ALL sram set up
