How sticky.

Where ever
o_O Went out today for a quick hour and wore my new five ten freerider pros. I can’t believe how sticky they are, they are awesome. I have worn spd’s for years but fancied a change on my new bike. I used to ride flats all the time. I found today I was coming to gates to open and twisting my foot to come off the pedal like you do when riding with spd’s. So pleased with them. (y)

Pretty much any specialist flat shoes for mtb paired with proper flats with pins will be a step up from a pair of old trainers in terms of grip. I've had 510's and the grip is top of the range. In fact I found the grip to be too much! I don't know about anybody else, but without looking I can seldom get my foot on the pedal spot-on first time. So I need to shuffle my foot (or feet) a bit to get them in the perfect place. With 510's no shuffling is possible!! I have to lift my foot clean off and reposition it, which is not always possible. So I bought some Shimano flats. I found them to be slightly less grippy. Only slightly, but enough for me to be able to shuffle my foot.

The other problem I had with 510s was the amount of water they absorbed and how long they took to dry out. I understand that the water problem has been addressed since I bought my pair, but I have no idea how well.

Been seeing five ten for years but could never justify or afford really..are they worth it ? Tempted to grab a pair rather than my old trainers

To be honest everything is expensive but if you want it you have to pay for it. I tried so many places that had them for sale at £85/90 but not in my size so just had to suck it up and pay full price. In my opinion they are worth it.(y)

I took some pins out after I got my 510s, super grippy rubber, very comfy...not much protection though. I bought local @Stiff in Summerbridge, Yorkshire...£10 cheaper too?

I've just received a pair of Five Ten Trailcross LT.

I've not tried any Five Tens of any type before, and I haven't had a chance to try these yet. Size wise I went for 11 which is what I usually go for in a normal shoe and they fit perfectly even with different sock styles. Just walking around indoors on our wooden floors the soles feel super sticky so I am sure they will be great to ride with.

I ordered direct from Adidas via their app and received 20% discount on RRP which turned out to be lower than I found these anywhere else.

Now all I need is my own e-mtb to use them with (I have been using a friends spare Merida 160 until I find my own ?).

Wouldn't taking pins out increase grip? Like walking on ice with spikes, less spikes more planted. Would be easier to pick up your foot and readjust it with more pins.

I only remove the centre pin, the one that used to gouge my shin until I got knee&shin guards.
You see, that's the proof that the centre pin is actually the only relevant pin.

I remove all the rest of mine. You then have a situation that all the weight is concentrated through one central point. This gives you more grip and also means you can rotate your foot around the pedal without lifting off much.

Ok .. I'm talking rubbish .. but it's worth a try .. @Gary would do it. He sometimes rides with the pins just on his shins for shits and giggles.

Thats why I ride clipped in, foot in the right place every time, lovely smooth shins, and much more confidence in the nasty stuff.

You see, when it gets nasty is when I got less confident when I was clipped in. Early on in my mtb career, I rode clipped in for 18 months before going on a guided ride in a mountainous region that was full of "nasty stuff". When I got back I switched to flats. I still have the SPDs and the shoes and occasionally ride locally in them. But I keep the flats for my proper mtb rides. :p
