Answered How do people load their bike safely in a van.

I have a Vito van as my daily driver and would like to know how others safely stick their bikes safely in a van. I go out with a mate sometimes and we put both bikes in the back and just throw a blanket over them to stop the damaging each other but would like a better solution. So photos and idea to strap bike in the back of a van would be great. I am happy to fabricate something if needed. ?

Stood up, leant against the side and bungeed to secure. (either to the sides or bulkhead?
One on each side of the van and there's no need for protecting them from each other.

If you're taking wheels off to secure your bike in a van it kinda defeats the point in having a van, no?

Not wanting to take wheels off. Just want to get bikes in the back easy and out and ride.

if it's ply lined attach load hooks or rails (you can also do this if it's not but there's no need really)

I have 2 of these, one on either side of my van. Wheel bike in, clamp and done. When not in use just have the plate on the side so nothing to get in the way i did cut a bit of the lengh so the bike doesn't stick out too much.

Have to say Bungee cords and tie down are all i have ever needed - i do like the look of one of those clamps though, more for if i need to work on bike in the van.

In our Vito the wife uses a ramp to get them in and out due to her bad shoulder when I am not there, front tyre up against the folded rear seats to avoid taking front wheels off.

Then a single luggage strap around the down tube and to the tie down anchor loop on the floor, they never move.

It depends what else I have in the van and how dirty the bike is. Generally I just throw it in the side door and lean it against the bed, with a bungee over it off im feeling particularly keen. If we are away in the van or its full of gear, I take a wheel of and put it across the van upside down behind the back doors.

I use two tie down straps (like this) hooked to the barends and van floor rings. This puts some load on fork spring and front tire, is very secure, simple and fast. Same method that is used for transporting heavy motorbikes.

I keep the tie down straps always attached to the floor rings and adjusted to the correct length, so it takes about one minute to throw the bike in and secure it for transporting.

I was at the cycle show last week and met a company called BIKESTOW. They make 2 and 4 bike stands that will fit in my Transit. They folded down but also looked very sturdy. The model they had would only take up to a 2.6 tyre but they are retooling to make a version that will take up to a 3" tyre. As soon as I get mine I will post a review. They seemed like a nice bunch of people - here's the link

I use these Oxford Cycle stands, I purchased several of them from Richard @Race Co Cycles. They fit 2.8 and 2.6 tyres. I transport upto 4 e bikes in the back of my T6 with minimal straping down. They get used to store bikes in the garage and for maintenance. Pics of bikes loaded in van if required.
