Has Maxxis Minion durability gone down the pan?????

I swapped to 2.8" Maxxis Minion tyres when I bought my e-bike a couple of years back as Schwalbe were not making what I wanted in the sizes required at the time. Being impressed with the grip & wear characteristics across a broad range of surfaces I put them on my regular bike too in 2.5/2.4" and have had trouble free riding on those two sets of tyres since.
The e-bike tyres finally wore out a couple of months back so I replaced them with Minions again, this time 2.6". Within half a dozen rides I got a snake bite puncture on the back, bit of a surprise as I was running 30psi with Rimpact inserts at the time. 2.8" went back on and still ok.
Move on a month, and I'm out on the new e-bike, three rides in and again a hole in the rear this time just by the rim. :(
They have all been Exo casings (the last one might be an Exo+) riding the in the same way at similar places.

Anyone else found the same with the more recent Minions?

Taken on board positive comments from other forum members and going to give Michelin E-Wild a go.

Bit of a shame as I'd had a good experience with Minions, pretty much fit and forget other than checking pressures.

I am on 2 Maxxis with no problem whatsoever. In fact i am planning on buying more maxxis. Maybe a different TPI or a different compound would serve you better. From my experience i can only recommand Maxxis. From prior bikes i was also happy on Continental. If mud is rare in your area look at Rekons. Good luck.Oh by the way my 2.8 is on 40 mm like my front 3.0

I got about 300 miles at the most out of a 2.8 rear dhr minion exo before the side wall split right by the bead about 4 inch long. I would have taken it back to the lbs but was embarrassed after just having to return two £70 helmets because of inferior quality, rachet slipping.

The 2.8" DHF/DHR dual compound ones did over 1500 miles on the Jam2 without issue. I was a complete convert and would piss buddies off raving about them. That's why I'm surprised how quickly I've trashed two new ones of similar spec on similar trails and wondered if others had a experienced the same sort of thing.
I tend to follow a similar ethos expressed by @Gary elsewhere of it being pointless running an extra 1/2 kg un-sprung on either end of your bike in the form of DH casings if its unnecessary so would have preferred not to go down that route..

I've had zero issues with Minions in EXO for years, none that are the fault of the tires anyways. You could try a DD casing on the rear, which would likely do the trick.

I just bought a Giant Trance e+2 which comes with Maxxis front and rear as new, however I went straight for Michelin E-Wilds running tubeless based upon the store managers recommendation, the stock Minion and Rekon plus innertubes can be kept as backups in case of punctures.

The Maxis sidewalls seem pretty flimsy.

All cheng shun tires fall apart and lack durability . They basically caved intense tires back when.
Vee rubber manufactured tires or michelin. A few companies have switched from cheng shung to vee rubber manufacturing. E13 and i think possibly spesh and bonti have switched

In the past 2 years different well knowned and respected brands seems to have produced ** a bad batch** I had a tire loose the round form. My LBS had an expression for that but i forgot. They replaced it on the rim, it was less bad. About 2 weeks of riding and the weird feeling was gone.

Why fine all this time at those pressures only to have puncture on two new tyres in short succession? Riding locations & style hasn’t changed.
Maybe just coincidence & bad luck ?‍♂️

You've already explained you're pinching and ripping your tyres on the rim. The tyre is deforming so much (from impact) that it's physically folding into the edge of the rim and ripping.
The reason for this is there's not enough air pressure in the tyre to support it.

Why do folk find this so difficult to accept?

either go to tougher casings or run higher pressures

Well there's a sweeping statement.
Assuming you mean Cheng shin (CST) and not some Aliexpress rip off with a similar name I'd have to disagree completely.

I've pretty much only run CST (Maxxis) on my Enduro, Emtb and DH bikes for the last 19 years and haven't ever had any issues with durability whatsoever. That's a lot tyres and a lot of riding.

Maybe the problem tire is not the maxxis :p
it doesn't really matter what the tyre is if you're (dirtnvrt not you) going to make sweeping (BS) statements
CST = Maxxis
as in they own the company

I run the 2.4 at 30psi.
You are forgetting the ramp up too.

Edit: sorry that should be 35psi

What?

you've lost me. What's "ramp up"?

I meant I couldn't get away with a singleply 2.4 at below 30 except in soft/wet conditions. and even then I still wouldn't (I don't ride anywhere with ONLY soft conditions)

Made a mistake and corrected above, I run the 2.4 at 35psi.
The inserts fill about 50% of the tyre with closed cell foam. Not quite the same a tokens in a shock but along the same lines.

er..

less tyre volume requires MOAR pressure to hold it's shape (support the tyre)

Tyre ramp up?

is this thread actually a secret game of bullshit bingo I've not been made aware of?

Ya generalizing a bit. Both durability and quality control has dropped a bit but probably for the most part other manufactures have really bumped up tgeir technology. In the last 5ish years ive had more than a few maxxis with wobbles because the tread is off center and loise beads. Also edging knobs cracking prematurely on both my maxxis and spesh. Theres better tires and better prices out there now despite maxxis having a bit of a monoply through habit and name recognition at bike shops

I agree in my area Maxxis has a large share and they Are Expensive. I got mine in exchange of other tires. We call that shelve advantage. At the pharmacy you will find tylenol for back pain and 6 other variety(the same shit, different color) so they push away the competition. Same with beers many formats to have an allmost monopoly. Other than my Rekon would you have a suggestion rolls well + grips well(i like to climb). 40 mm rims now 3.0 fr/2.8 rear. Thanks
