Bit a strange one this but please bare with me, my new GoPro 13 arrived today but I have a problem updating it, my old iPhone 7s is too old and will not allow me to update my GoPro, I’ve looked at YouTube and there’s a way of updating the GoPro manually but it’s click click tap tap and well beyond my technical abilities, can anyone explain in easy to understand steps of how to do this update please, I know I need a new phone but I’m not a contract type person so it’ll mean paying out £999 for a new iphone 16 pro, any help would be very much appreciated please 👍

Windows:

  1. Ensure your GoPro is powered off and has at least 50% battery charge.
  2. Insert your SD card into your computer and find the root level of your SD card.
  3. Download the update files here.
  4. In a new File Explorer window, go to your downloads, unzip the downloaded file, and look for the folder, UPDATE.
  5. Copy the unzipped UPDATE folder.
  6. Go to the window that has your SD card's root level showing and paste the UPDATE folder in an open space.
    • You should end up with DCIM, MISC, and UPDATE folders displayed.
  7. Safely eject the SD card from your computer, insert it into your GoPro, and power the camera on.
  8. Allow the camera to complete the update process (it'll turn off and on a couple of times).
  9. Once the rear LCD shows the language selection screen, you're good to go!
  10. If you're having trouble doing the manual update, try a different SD card.

above from the main Gopro web site so obviously the hyperlink to the update files will not work here. The process is not doubt the same but the a bove was listed as the manual process for the Gopro 12 Black as opposed to the 13!

Much easier to just download gopro Quik onto your phone and then pair the app with your gopro and any updates will be automatically downloaded. .......or are you saying Quick will not download to your phone??

why do you think a brand new Gopro needs an update anyway??

I’m sorry buddy but I forgot to mention that I’m trying to do this update on an iMac, is it the same process, as Dan has said, even brand new GoPro’s need updating before they’ll operate, trouble is my old phone is still working but it’s on the old IOS ☹️

The process is the same on any computer. All the manual update consists of is downloading the updated firmware file to the SD card.
So first thing is to create a folder on your computer and download the update to that folder. The update should be available on the main gopro website. Then put your sd card into the computer and download....it will appear on whatever drive the computer allocates to that usb / sd slot. Then as per the instructions above copy the update into the root file of the sd card.

Get used to using the computer! With any gopro the best and safest way to edit your video clips is to load them onto your computer using the sd card. You can then pull those video files into a video editing suite to produce your finished video. Avoid connecting gopro complete with card to a computer and don't delete, format or modify any video file on the sd card in a computer. Gopro uses its own File Access Table so only delete files or format the sd card using the gopro itself. Corruption of the sd card is the most common cause of gopro problems.

Oh don’t worry I do use my iMac regularly and it looks like I know more than I thought I did because I’ve been loading my GoPro footage onto my iMac directly from the SD card and not by connecting my GoPro, I’m not as stupid as I thought I was 🤪

Just a thanks @Mikerb and @HandsomeDanNZ for the help and advice i've received in updating my new GoPro 13, the advice was a big help although some of it was slightly different on my iMac 🤷‍♂️ no I idea why but nonetheless it worked and I have updated it and it works perfectly, once I'm well enough, I'm gonna hit the trails, try out my GoPro and test the new stuff I fitted to my bike, just need to nail the settings on my GoPro to get the best out of it for our glorious British weather and lighting conditions, cheers guys (y)🙏🙏🙏
