Seems there is a new Giant app with new accounts ? When I went to start the app to go bike I was presented with the annoying message that I could not continue to ride unless I “updated” my account:

Except that it doesn’t work. I go through the steps to sign up and it wants to send a verification code. Neither email or phone work though. Nothing is received.

Giant, wtf? Are you actively trying to sabotage people using your bikes? There is no way to bypass this process as far as I can tell.

Update: tried an hour later and got the notification this time. There is a grammar issue on this app screen though Giant:

With Giant recently going public on subject 'Ebike Tampering', don't be surprised if the app and updated device firmwares are collecting analytics to verify any speed derestriction device fitted. Or secondly, comparing cadence and torque outputs against battery use which could pick up speed sensor relocation (which many of us have done).

So when you turn up at the 'stealership' for warranty, they have an excuse to say 'NO' ($$$)

I very much dislike having to set up accounts the same as everyone else. I almost never use the Giant app, but it is needed for things like changing the motor settings etc. if you want to do that.

As far as riders who have derestricted bikes, that does void the warranty. If it didn't, the cost of repairs for wrecks caused by backyard bodgers would be passed on in higher prices. But no one likes the idea of companies collecting data.

I never understood why eMTB manufacturers restrict bikes at 25km for AUD and NZ when at the same time you can buy an electric skateboard or scooter from JBHIFI with no speed restrictions.

What makes the eMTB space special? Possibly off topic for this thread though.

In AU I understand a Federal import rule enforces importers (manufacturers) to restrict speed to 25kph or they cannot be sold. I suspect skateboards and scooters same. The controllers ex-factory may be set to that limit, and somewhere in the 'manual' may show how to change that limit. It is then up to the states to enforce their corresponding (25kph) local speed regulation.

Police are generally too busy fighting crime and DV to pull over wayward cyclists. In my town half don't wear helmets and half ride derestricted bikes. Besides that, a treadly can propel you well over 25kph...

The Giant app sucks and Giant should be ashamed at such a shoddy 'accessory' in their sales pitch.

We have Huge groups of Road bikers who are fit as going well over 25kph. Lack of crash protection... but thats no worries haha
Giant is Being wary of being blamed in court for 'allowing' something. However they need to pursue the whole 'we are not liable IF....' something happens.
I hate giant's business etiquette with a passion but they make some damn good enduro/dh/ebikes... the E+ Reign is such a beast

What I dont like about the updates is you dont know what it does and doesnt let you decline it. I know I would roll back to when I first got the bike as that felt great ( could also have been a case of newitist) but range was up there. Now after update after update range is down and so is the way assist feels.

The app still doesnt show the bike you own or allow you to use a pic of it. The updated app was terrible transition as well. I lost couple hundred KM which is almost 1k km lost total (some motor error shut it down and reset the KM to 0). Also recording a ride under X amount of km/time isnt allowed to be saved. Guess thats not enough analytics for them to bother with and so you shouldnt either.

They may be taking a leaf out of the Apple book, and programming the battery for an early demise so you will update your bike or buy a new outrageously expensive battery. But unlike an iPhone, you CAN replace the battery !
